Chapter 5 - Fire on the Harbor

The North Bay docks were consumed by a roaring inferno.
Orange flames licked the night sky, casting long, sinister shadows across the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The old wooden town archives building near the pier was burning, thick black smoke billowing into the rain-slicked air.
In the center of the gravel staging yard stood Charles Croft—a broad, barrel-chested man in his fifties with a thick gray beard and a scar running through his left eyebrow. He stood beside two gasoline tankers, his remaining ten mercenaries surrounding him with heavy weapons.
"Burn it all!" Croft roared to his men. "Burn every ledger, every deed, every paper that ties me to those offshore accounts! If I can't have the North Bay land, nobody will!"
SCREECH!
A convoy of four dark Sterling Syndicate SUVs smashed through the wooden harbor gates, executing a sharp power-slide that formed an impenetrable wall of steel across the staging yard entrance.
The doors flew open simultaneously.
Twenty Sterling operatives poured out, taking tactical positions behind the vehicles, their weapons trained directly on Croft’s crew.
From the central SUV, Lucian Sterling stepped out into the rain.
Beside him stepped Megan Walsh, wearing a heavy dark wool coat that wrapped warmly around her frame. She stood tall at Lucian’s side, her head held high, refusing to shrink into the shadows ever again.
Charles Croft’s eyes widened in disbelief as he saw Megan standing beside the most powerful syndicate lord on the East Coast.
"Sterling!" Croft bellowed over the roar of the fire. "You're interfering in business that doesn't concern you! That girl belongs to my organization! Her family owed my predecessor three generations of debt!"
Lucian walked forward three paces, stopping in the open rain, completely fearless.
"Megan Walsh belongs to no one," Lucian declared, his voice echoing across the harbor like a judgment from the heavens. "Her debts were paid the moment you tried to murder her. And your reign in this city ends tonight, Croft."
"I have ten men with automatic rifles, Sterling!" Croft laughed insanely, gesturing to his mercenaries. "And I have enough gasoline here to blow this entire pier to hell!"
Megan stepped forward beside Lucian, pulling the folded paper from her coat pocket and holding it up into the bright glare of the fires.
"You don't have the ledger, Croft!" Megan called out, her voice clear, strong, and unwavering against the wind. "You burned the building, but I have the wax seal! I decoded the numbers on the back while we drove here! The serial numbers don't just tie you to land fraud—they tie you to the federal embezzlement scandal in Washington!"
Croft’s face went completely chalk-white. "What?!"
"She’s right, Croft," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a lethal register as he raised his hand. "Federal agents and state police are already surrounding the outer perimeter of this bay. You aren't leaving this pier."
Panicked, Croft grabbed his sidearm and pointed it directly at Megan! "You little bitch—"
BANG!
Lucian didn't wait.
He pulled his weapon and fired a single, immaculate shot. The heavy round struck Croft’s right shoulder, spinning him around and knocking his gun clattering into the wet gravel.
Croft’s mercenaries dropped their weapons instantly, raising their hands into the air as the sirens of fifty police cruisers and federal vehicles echoed down the coastal highway, their red and blue lights flashing through the rain and smoke.
Federal agents poured into the yard, securing the area, taking Croft and his surviving men into custody.
As the paramedics checked Croft’s bleeding shoulder, the disgraced mobster looked up at Megan standing beside Lucian.
"Who... who are you?" Croft rasped out, coughing blood.

Megan looked down at him, her hand sliding naturally into Lucian’s large, warm palm. Lucian’s fingers closed around hers, anchoring her with absolute, unwavering strength.
"I am Megan Walsh," she said clearly, her voice echoing with absolute self-worth. "And I am done hiding."
