Chapter 2 - The Hitman in the Sub-Basement

The private elevator chime pinged softly, breaking the tense silence of the archive room.

Thomas Vance’s hand snapped to his side, his fingers wrapping around the grip of his weapon. "Nobody is scheduled on this floor until the morning cleaning crew at six."

Victor didn't flinch. He walked silently toward the glass partition, peering out into the dimly lit marble corridor. The elevator doors slid open to reveal an empty car, but the security monitor on the wall flashed a warning code: Sub-Basement Override Engaged.

"They didn't wait for the automated transfer," Victor said softly, the realization dawning with chilling clarity. "They knew the audit was flagged. Someone inside the security detail sold us out."

Clara stood up, her laptop clutched against her chest. "Is there another way out of this suite?"

"There's the service freight lift," Thomas said, stepping back into the room. "But if the sub-basement override is active, the lift controls have been locked from the main terminal."

Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered and died. The archive room plunged into darkness, save for the blue, unyielding glow of Clara’s laptop screen casting long, distorted shadows across the leather-bound ledgers.

Down the hall, the heavy thud of a boot hitting a drywall partition echoed through the quiet floor.

Bang. Bang.

Silenced shots. Professional grouping. Someone was methodically sweeping the executive floor, eliminating anyone who might have stayed late.

"Clara," Victor said, his tone turning razor-sharp as he grabbed her arm and pulled her toward a heavy wooden bookshelf near the corner of the room. "Listen to me very carefully. This shelf is mounted on a hydraulic pivot. Behind it is an old utility shaft used for cable maintenance. It leads down to the underground parking garage."

"And you?" Clara asked, her eyes wide with fear.

"I'm going to go have a chat with my cousin," Victor replied, pulling a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer from a hidden holster beneath his jacket and checking the magazine with practiced efficiency. "Thomas, take her down. Get her to the black sedan in sector four. If I'm not down there by 4:30, take the flash drive and go straight to District Attorney Miller."

"Boss—" Thomas started to protest.

"Do it, Thomas!" Victor snapped, then turned and strode out into the darkened corridor toward the sound of approaching footsteps, vanishing into the shadows.
