Chapter 5 - The Cleansing Fire

By dawn, the rain had cleared, leaving the Manhattan streets gleaming under a pale, washed-out sun.
The executive floor of Romano Holdings looked like a crime scene because, officially, it was. Federal agents in blue windbreakers swarmed the marble corridors, carting out boxes of digital drives, paper ledgers, and financial records.
Lorenzo Viti, handcuffed and flanked by two FBI agents, was led past the bank of elevators, his face pale and twisted with bitter fury as he locked eyes with Victor standing near the glass partition.
Victor didn't say a word to him. He simply watched his cousin—the man he had trusted like a brother—get escorted out of the empire he had tried to dismantle from the inside.
Clara sat at a pristine conference table in the corner of the room, sipping a fresh cup of black coffee provided by an apologetic junior executive. Her laptop sat open beside her, its hard drive cleared of temporary files, her professional reputation intact and her forensic report formally entered into federal evidence.
Victor walked over, resting his hands on the back of the empty chair opposite her. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes deeper than they had been the night before, but there was a palpable sense of relief in his posture.
"The federal prosecutor tells me your audit is bulletproof," Victor said quietly. "Every shell company, every fraudulent fuel surcharge, every offshore account—it's all documented. Lorenzo and his co-conspirators won't be seeing daylight for a very long time."
"And the company?" Clara asked, looking up at him. "Will Romano Holdings survive the restructuring?"
"It will survive," Victor nodded. "In fact, it’s going to be cleaner than it has been in twenty years. Which brings me to another matter."
He reached into his breast pocket and slid a thick, heavy envelope across the polished mahogany table.
Clara frowned, looking down at it. "What's this?"
"A retainer," Victor said simply. "And a permanent contract. Mercer & Rowe is a fine firm, Clara, but I need someone who doesn't just read the numbers I put in front of her—someone who actually knows how to look where nobody else dares to look."
Clara opened the envelope. Inside was a figure that made her breath catch—a retainer fee larger than what she had earned in her last three years combined, paired with an offer to head up an independent internal compliance division reporting directly to the CEO.

"You're offering me complete autonomy?" Clara asked, raising an eyebrow skeptically. "Even if the numbers point back to you?"
"Especially if they point back to me," Victor replied, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. "Every empire needs a keeper of the gate, Clara. And I think you're the only one tough enough to hold the keys."
