Chapter 4 - The 4:12 A.M. Deadline

The cold rain hit Clara like a physical blow as she burst out onto the dimly lit New York street. The digital clock on a nearby bank marquee flashed 4:05 A.M.
Seven minutes until the $10.6 million transfer executed automatically.
She clutched her laptop bag tightly against her chest, her breathing ragged as she jogged blindly down the wet pavement, trying to find a subway entrance or a taxi that would take her away from the towering glass monolith of Romano Holdings.
A dark SUV screeched around the corner, its high beams cutting through the rain and locking directly onto her.
Clara froze. The vehicle slowed, idling just ten feet away. The passenger door swung open, and a man in a soaked trench coat stepped out.
"Get in, Ms. Higgins," a deep, familiar voice commanded.
It wasn't the hitman.
It was Victor Romano.
His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt stained with dark smudges of soot and rain, and a small cut bled quietly just above his left eyebrow. But in his hand, he held his phone, tapping furiously at the screen.
Clara didn't ask questions; she scrambled into the front passenger seat and slammed the door shut. The SUV lurched forward into traffic before the door was even fully latched.
"Did you find Lorenzo?" Clara gasped, clutching her bruised shoulder.
"Lorenzo tried to catch the early flight to London," Victor said grimly, his eyes fixed on the road as he accelerated through a yellow light. "He's currently being entertained by two federal marshals at JFK airport. But the server override was set on an independent timer. We have less than three minutes to kill the script before the money clears."
He threw a small, ruggedized satellite phone onto her lap.
"You have root access to the master ledger on your laptop," Victor said urgently. "Open the terminal. Type in the override command I gave you in the archive: V-Romano-774-Delta. Execute it before the clock hits twelve."
Clara flipped open her laptop on her knees. The screen flickered to life, bathing her face in pale blue light. The countdown timer dominated the display: 00:02:15... 00:02:14...
Her fingers flew across the keyboard, typing the complex sequence of cryptographic commands while the rain drummed a frantic tattoo against the windshield.
"Come on, come on," she muttered under her breath, watching the progress bar crawl across the screen at a agonizingly slow pace.
00:00:45... 00:00:44...
"The firewall is pushing back," Clara cried out, her hands shaking as a red error box popped up on the display. "It requires a secondary biometric key—your thumbprint or retinal scan!"
Victor didn't hesitate. He pulled the SUV over to the curb with a sharp skid, ripped his phone from the console, and jammed it against the secondary port cable extending from Clara’s laptop, pressing his thumb against the built-in scanner while staring directly into the front-facing camera.
BEEP.
A green checkmark flashed across the screen.

TRANSFER ABORTED. ASSETS FROZEN. SECURE VAULT LOCKED.
Clara slumped back against the seat, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the timer disappeared, replaced by a secure system confirmation.
