Chapter 4 - The Penthouse Strategy

The Ashford Tower rose seventy stories above the glittering, rain-slicked skyline of the city’s financial district.

The top three floors housed Conrad’s private penthouse—a modern masterpiece of polished concrete, floor-to-ceiling glass, and dark leather furniture that overlooked the sweeping panorama of the harbor and Pier 42.

It was Thursday evening, twenty-four hours before the scheduled arrival of Container 884.

Inside the penthouse’s state-of-the-art command center, Maya sat before a wall of curved monitors, her fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard with dizzying speed. Lines of green code, bank routing numbers, and satellite feeds swept across the screens, illuminating her face in a cool, digital glow.

Conrad stood behind her, one hand resting on the back of her leather chair, his presence a warm, reassuring weight against her shoulder.

"I found it," Maya announced, a triumphant smile breaking across her face. "Dominic Vane’s primary operational account. It's routed through a private bank in the Cayman Islands, linked directly to the bill of lading for Container 884."

Conrad leaned down, his face just inches from hers as he looked at the screen. She could smell the scent of rich cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain on his jacket.

"How much is in the account?" Conrad asked quietly.

"Forty-two million dollars," Maya replied, holding her breath as his cheek brushed against her hair. "The advance payment from the cartel buyer. It's locked behind a two-factor biometric key held by Vane’s chief financial officer."

"Not anymore," Conrad murmured. He tapped a button on his wrist comms device. "Silas. Bring Mr. Vane’s CFO into the conference room."

Maya turned her head in shock. "You have Vane’s CFO?"

"We picked him up at his mistress’s apartment two hours ago," Conrad said smoothly. "He was remarkably cooperative once Brutus took an interest in his leather shoes."

Maya let out a genuine, breathless laugh—the first real laugh she had shared in three months. Conrad looked down at her, his dark brows lifting slightly, his eyes softening as he took in the radiant beauty of her smile.

"You have a incredible laugh, Miss Lin," Conrad murmured, his voice dropping into a thick, intimate tone that sent shivers trailing down her spine.

Maya’s smile faded into a soft, breathless gasp. She looked up into his grey eyes, trapped in the magnetic pull between them. For twenty-four hours, she had watched him command armies, orchestrate complex financial warfare, and execute terrifying strategy. But right now, looking down at her, he was just a man—a powerful, dangerous man who was looking at her as if she were the only thing in the room that mattered.

"Conrad..." she whispered his first name for the first time.

He raised a hand, his knuckles gently tracing the soft line of her jawline. "After tomorrow night, Maya... when Vane is finished and your name is cleared... what are you going to do?"

Maya looked down at her hands on the keyboard. "I don't know. I spent three months just trying to stay alive until tomorrow. I haven't thought about next week."

"Stay," Conrad said softly.

Maya’s head snapped back up. "What?"

"Stay with me," Conrad repeated, his thumb pressing gently against her lower lip. "Not as a fugitive. Not as an accountant. Stay here. At Blackwood Ridge. With me."

"Conrad... your world is full of blood and shadow," Maya whispered, her voice trembling. "I'm just a girl who likes spreadsheets."

"You are the woman who ran through my woods with a knife and survived three months against a mafia syndicate," Conrad corrected, leaning down until his lips were a fraction of an inch from hers. "You have more steel in your spine than half the men who work for me."

Before Maya could answer, the red emergency light on the central console flashed brightly, accompanied by an urgent chime.

Conrad instantly straightened up, his face shifting back into hard tactical focus as he pressed the comms speaker. "Report."

"Mr. Ashford!" Silas’s voice came through the speaker, tight and strained. "We have a breach at the harbor! Harrison moved the timeline forward! Container 884 wasn't scheduled for tomorrow midnight... the ship docked an hour ago! Vane’s tactical team is already at Pier 42 unloading the container!"

Maya gasped, jumping out of her chair. "They tricked us! The Friday manifest was a decoy to draw your security away!"

Conrad’s grey eyes turned into twin pools of liquid iron.

"Silas," Conrad roared into the comms. "Mobilize the strike team. Tell Marcus to cut the power to Pier 42. We move now!"

He turned to Maya, grabbing her gently by the shoulders. "You stay here in the penthouse. It's locked down. No one gets in without my biometric clearance."

"No!" Maya shouted, grabbing the front of his tactical vest. "Harrison altered the digital manifest on the dock mainframes! If you just raid the pier, the automated system will auto-transmit the fraudulent records to the federal database, framing you instantly! I have to be at the dock terminal to manually overwrite the server!"

Conrad stared at her, terror for her safety warring against the brutal logic of her words.

"If you get hurt..." Conrad rasped.

"You protected me on your mountain, Conrad," Maya said, her eyes blazing with fierce, unwavering devotion. "Let me protect your empire."

May you like

Conrad pulled her violently against his chest, crushing his lips against hers in a fierce, passionate, breathtaking kiss that tasted of fire, rain, and absolute promise.

"If anyone touches you tonight," Conrad whispered against her lips, "I will burn this city to the ground. Let's go."
