Chapter 6 - The Dawn at Blackwood Ridge

Six months later.

The morning sun rose over the majestic peaks of Blackwood Ridge, painting the mountain valley in breathtaking shades of gold, amber, and deep rose. The air was crisp, clean, and filled with the sweet scent of pine and blooming mountain wildflowers.

The high granite wall surrounding the Ashford estate stood strong, but the heavy wrought-iron gates were open, bathed in warm sunlight.

On the wide timber porch of the mansion, Brutus lay stretched out on a soft velvet dog bed, his heavy tail thumping lazily against the wooden floorboards as he watched a yellow butterfly flutter past the stairs.

Inside the sunlit library, floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered an unobstructed view of the sweeping forest below.

Maya sat behind a massive mahogany desk—not running from mafia assassins, but wearing an elegant ivory silk blouse and tailored trousers, reviewing the quarterly financial reports for Ashford Global Logistics.

As the newly appointed Chief Financial Officer of the entire Ashford enterprise, she had completely restructured the family's assets, liquidating all legacy illicit holdings and converting the empire into a three-billion-dollar legitimate shipping and tech logistics powerhouse.

Dominic Vane and his surviving lieutenants were currently serving life sentences in a federal supermax facility, convicted on federal racketeering and international arms trafficking charges based on the bulletproof evidence Maya had provided.

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind.

Conrad leaned down, resting his chin on her shoulder, pressing a warm kiss against the curve of her neck. He wore a simple white linen shirt and trousers, his grey eyes soft, warm, and filled with a deep, unshakeable peace that had replaced the cold glacier of his past.

"You're working too hard, Mrs. Ashford," Conrad murmured softly, his thumb gently caressing her wedding ring—a breathtaking ring featuring a rare, flawless black diamond set in platinum.

Maya smiled, leaning her head back against his chest, placing her hands over his. "Someone has to keep your legal shipping routes profitable, Mr. Ashford. You spent too many years paying off corrupt port directors."

Conrad chuckled—a rich, deep sound that warmed the entire room. "I stand corrected. My CFO is relentless."

He turned her leather chair around so she was facing him, looking down into her clear, beautiful eyes.

"The helicopter is fueled on the pad," Conrad said softly. "Silas has packed our bags for the villa in Amalfi. Two weeks. No spreadsheets, no servers, and no port logistics."

Maya’s eyes sparkled with joy. "Just you, me, and the Mediterranean?"

"And Brutus," Conrad added with a smirk, gesturing toward the porch. "He refuses to stay behind."

Maya laughed—a radiant, musical sound that filled the grand mansion with pure light. She stood up, wrapping her arms around Conrad’s neck, pulling him down into a tender, passionate kiss that tasted of sweet morning coffee and forever.

When they parted, Conrad looked down at her, his slate-grey eyes shining with profound, eternal devotion.

"Six months ago," Conrad whispered, his hand gently cupping her face, "a fugitive woman ran through my woods with a knife in her hand and blood on her face."

"And a terrifying man with a giant dog stepped aside and let her in," Maya reminded him with a soft, beautiful smile.

Conrad pulled her close against his heart, looking out the grand windows at the breathtaking golden mountain sunrise.

"It was the best decision I ever made," Conrad said softly.

And there, high above the world on Blackwood Ridge, where the dark shadows of the past had finally dissolved into the brilliant dawn of a new life, the runaway woman and the king of the coast walked out onto the porch together—safe, whole, and bound by a love that no storm could ever tear apart.
