Chapter 5 - The Blood at Pier 42

Pier 42 was a sprawling industrial nightmare of towering steel cranes, stacked shipping containers, and slick, rain-drenched asphalt that echoed with the heavy crash of the harbor tide.
The entire port was cast in pitch-black darkness.
Ten minutes earlier, Conrad’s tactical team had detonated an electromagnetic pulse device at the primary transformer substation, plunging the entire four-hundred-acre dock facility into blackness, killing the security cameras, electric fences, and primary communications.
Rain lashed against the metallic sides of Container 884 as a heavy diesel gantry crane lowered the forty-ton steel box onto the concrete staging area.
Surrounding the container were twenty heavily armed men wearing dark tactical gear with Vane Syndicate patches. Standing near the crane control cab was Dominic Vane himself—a broad, silver-haired man in his late fifties with a cruel, pockmarked face, wearing a heavy leather trench coat. Beside him stood the traitor, Harrison, sweating profusely despite the freezing rain as he clutched a ruggedized military laptop.
"Is the federal transmission ready?" Dominic Vane barked over the sound of the rain, pulling a cigar from his coat.
"Y-yes, Mr. Vane!" Harrison stammered, his fingers trembling over the keys. "The moment we crack the container locks, the fake manifest linking the missile guidance systems to Conrad Ashford’s private shell company will be broadcast to the FBI regional headquarters!"
"Good," Vane sneered, lighting his cigar with a gold Zippo. "By sunrise, Conrad will be in federal custody, and I will own every dock from here to Boston—"
BOOM!
A deafening explosion shattered the darkness as a flashbang grenade detonated fifty feet away, blinding the Vane mercenaries in a brilliant burst of white light and concussive sound!
"AMBUSH!" a mercenary screamed!
Before the men could raise their weapons, dark shadows burst from behind the surrounding shipping containers!
Conrad’s elite tactical squad opened fire with silenced submachine guns! The black night erupted into a chaotic, terrifying storm of muzzle flashes, shattering glass, and screams of dying men!
Conrad advanced through the crossfire like an unstoppable force of nature. Dressed in full body armor, his Sig Sauer spitting lethal lead with terrifying precision, he dropped three Vane mercenaries in three seconds, moving with cold, mechanical efficiency.
Beside him, guarded by two heavy tactical officers, Maya sprinted through the shadows toward the dock's central server shed—a small cinderblock building fifty yards from Container 884.
"Maya! Go!" Conrad shouted over the deafening gunfire, dropping another shooter who raised a rifle from atop a container.
Maya kicked open the door of the server shed, throwing herself inside as bullets chewed through the wooden doorframe behind her!
Inside, red emergency battery lights cast a eerie glow over racks of humming servers. Maya pulled her laptop from her backpack, jammed a high-speed fiber-optic cable into the main switch, and began typing furiously.
"Come on... come on..." she chanted, her fingers a blur over the keys as she bypassed Harrison’s firewalls, tracing the automated federal broadcast protocol. "Thirty seconds to override..."
Outside, the battle was ending with brutal swiftness.
Conrad’s men had wiped out the Vane mercenaries. Dominic Vane, his leather coat soaked in rain and blood, backed up against the steel wall of Container 884, clutching a wounded shoulder, his pistol dropped in the puddles.
Harrison lay on the concrete ten feet away, weeping frantically as Marcus held him pinned beneath a heavy combat boot.
Conrad walked slowly toward Dominic Vane, his gun lowered at his side, his face carved from dark, merciless granite.
"It's over, Dominic," Conrad said softly, his voice carrying over the sound of the rain and distant harbor waves.
Dominic spat blood onto the concrete, glaring at Conrad with psychotic, dying hatred. "You think you won, Ashford?! The transmission is already going through! The feds are coming! You're finished!"
Inside the server shed, Maya slammed her palm down on the enter key!
A bright green prompt flashed across her screen: FEDERAL BROADCAST OVERWRITTEN. ORIGINAL VANE MANIFEST TRANSMITTED TO DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY.
Maya gasped out a laugh of pure triumph! "Got you!"
Suddenly, the rear window of the server shed shattered into a thousand glass shards!
A hand reached through, grabbing Maya violently by her hair and dragging her backward against the server rack!
It was Viktor—Vane’s chief enforcer, bloody, wounded, but still breathing! He pulled a heavy tactical knife from his belt, pinning Maya’s head against the steel rack, his yellow teeth bared in a psychotic sneer.
"You little bitch," Viktor growled, raising the blade toward her throat. "You ruined everything!"
Maya didn't scream. She didn't freeze.
She reached down to her waist, pulled the bone-handled pocketknife from her pocket, flicked the blade open with a sharp CLICK, and drove the three-inch steel spike straight into Viktor’s inner thigh with every ounce of force she possessed!
Viktor roared in agonizing pain, dropping his knife as he stumbled backward, clutching his arterial wound!
Before he could recover, the door of the server shed was kicked completely off its hinges!
Conrad burst into the room. He took in the scene in a fraction of a second—Viktor bleeding on the floor, Maya holding her bloody pocketknife, alive and unbroken.
Conrad raised his Sig Sauer and fired two rounds into Viktor’s chest, ending the enforcer instantly.
Conrad dropped his weapon, stepped over the body, and pulled Maya into his arms, crushing her against his chest as if he would never let her go. He pressed his face into her dark hair, his entire body trembling with a terror he had never felt in his entire life.
"Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Conrad rasped, his voice raw, broken with emotion.
"I'm okay... I'm okay, Conrad," Maya sobbed, wrapping her arms around his neck, holding him tightly. "I stopped the transmission. The feds have Vane's actual manifest. Your port is clean."
May you like
Conrad pulled back, looking at her glowing, fierce face. He let out a low, breathless laugh, kissing her deeply, fiercely, right there among the humming servers and shattered glass.
"You incredible, terrifying woman," Conrad whispered against her lips.
