Chapter 4 - The Siege of Chicago

The war for Chicago’s underworld did not play out in open street battles, but in swift, merciless midnight raids.
Over the next forty-eight hours, Rocco Moretti unleashed the full, terrifying power of his syndicate. Loyal Moretti squads struck Santoro’s illegal gambling dens, seized his warehouses along the Chicago River, and shut down his extortion rackets.
Every ledger recovered from Frankie’s office revealed a massive network of predatory loans targeting vulnerable families across the East Side. Rocco personally directed his lieutenants to visit every single victim, returning their stolen property, erasing their fraudulent debts, and providing them with financial protection.
By Thursday evening, Marco Santoro had been driven into hiding, stripped of his wealth, his territory, and his men. But a cornered rat is always the most dangerous.
At the Riverwoods estate, the storm raged outside for a third consecutive night.
Inside, Sarah Vance was walking slowly through the grand library. Her strength was returning quickly, thanks to proper nutrition and medicine. Her dark hair was neatly styled, and she wore a soft grey cashmere sweater provided by the estate staff.
She stopped before a large mahogany desk where Rocco sat reviewing financial documents under the warm light of a brass lamp.
"You haven't slept in two days, Rocco," Sarah said quietly, her voice carrying a soft, tender concern that caught him off guard.
Rocco looked up from his papers, rubbing his tired eyes. The sight of Sarah—healthy, vibrant, and standing safely in his library—instantly washed away the exhaustion weighing on his shoulders.
"I sleep when my city is clean, Sarah," Rocco said, leaning back in his leather chair. "How are the children?"
"Leo is asleep in his new nursery," Sarah smiled softly. "And Emma... she refuses to leave her new bike. She parked it right beside her bed."
A rare, warm chuckle escaped Rocco’s lips. "She’s a fighter, that little girl of yours."
Sarah walked closer to the desk, her hands resting on the dark wood. She looked down at him with an emotion so deep it made Rocco’s pulse quicken.
"I heard what you did," Sarah whispered. "Your men came to my old neighborhood today. They brought back Mrs. Higgins' stolen savings. They bought new furniture for the widow on 4th Street. They paid for little Tommy’s leukemia treatment."
"I am merely fixing what was done in my name," Rocco said gruffly, trying to hide his discomfort with praise.
"No," Sarah said firmly, reaching out to cover his large, calloused hand with her own. "You are giving people hope in a place where hope was dead. You saved my life, Rocco. You saved my children. I don't know how I can ever repay a debt like that."
Rocco stood up slowly, looking down into her bright hazel eyes. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the faint, fading bruise on her temple.
"You owe me nothing, Sarah," Rocco murmured, his voice low and intense. "The day I found you on that floor, something inside me came back to life. You and your children brought light into a house that has been empty for far too long."
For a breathtaking moment, the distance between them evaporated. Sarah leaned slightly into his touch, her breath hitching as she felt the absolute strength and warmth of the man standing before her.
Suddenly, the red emergency lights in the library began to flash silently.
The heavy oak doors burst open. Mateo rushed in, a tactical submachine gun slung across his chest.
"Rocco! We have a breach at the perimeter gates!" Mateo yelled. "Santoro brought thirty heavily armed mercenaries! They rammed a garbage truck through the front entrance!"
Sarah gasped, her face draining of color. "The children—!"
"Mateo, get Sarah and the kids into the subterranean panic room now!" Rocco ordered instantly, pulling two heavy pistols from his desk drawer.
"Rocco, no! Come with us!" Sarah cried, grabbing his arm frantically.
Rocco looked into her eyes, his expression turning into an unyielding wall of iron. "This is my home, Sarah. No one threatens my family under my roof."
He kissed her forehead swiftly—a fierce, protective gesture that sent a shockwave through her heart—before pushing her toward Mateo. "Go! Now!"
Outside, the quiet estate gardens exploded into gunfire. Headlights cut through the rain as three heavily modified trucks smashed through the courtyard, spilling armed men carrying assault rifles onto the marble steps.

Marco Santoro, his shoulder wrapped in heavy bandages and his face wild with manic desperation, stepped out of the lead truck, shouting over the sound of gunfire:
"Burn it down! Burn the whole damn place down! Bring me Rocco’s head!"
