Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Old Foundry

The battle for the Moretti estate was swift, violent, and absolute.
Rocco’s security teams, trained like elite military operators, held the high ground from the stone balconies. Crossfire rained down upon Santoro’s mercenaries, pinning them against the marble fountains in the courtyard.
Rocco himself moved through the shadows of the estate like a ghost of vengeance. Armed with his heavy pistols, he eliminated six attackers within the first two minutes, his tactical precision turning Santoro’s surprise assault into a fatal trap.
Realizing his men were being slaughtered, Marco Santoro panicked. He scrambled back into his truck, backing out of the ruined gate and speeding off into the rainy night toward his final stronghold—an abandoned iron foundry near the South Chicago docks.
Rocco stepped onto the bloody driveway, reloading his weapon with a cold, rhythmic click. Mateo ran up beside him, wiping soot from his forehead.
"The perimeter is secure, Rocco! All enemy combatants inside the courtyard are neutralized!" Mateo reported. "Santoro fled toward the South Side!"
"Stay here and guard Sarah and the children," Rocco ordered.
"Rocco, you can't go after him alone!" Mateo protested. "He’s desperate! He has nothing left to lose!"
"I am not alone," Rocco said, pointing to four dark SUVs loaded with his elite strike squad pulling up behind them. "And Marco Santoro has lived one hour longer than he should have."
Twenty minutes later, the dark outline of the abandoned South Side Ironworks towered against the storm-swept sky. The massive steel structure was a maze of rusted gantries, broken catwalks, and towering blast furnaces.
Rocco’s convoy breached the iron gates without stopping. His men fanned out, securing the perimeter exits while Rocco walked directly into the main smelting hall, his heavy boots echoing off the iron girders.
"Marco!" Rocco’s voice boomed through the cavernous building, cutting through the sound of rain drumming against the corrugated steel roof. "Show yourself!"
From the high catwalks forty feet above, Marco Santoro appeared, holding an assault rifle with trembling hands. His eyes were bloodshot, his face frantic with madness.
"You ruined me, Rocco!" Marco shrieked, his voice echoing off the metal walls. "I built an empire on those streets! I was going to be bigger than your father ever was! And you threw it all away for some worthless woman and her bastards!"
Rocco didn't flinch. He walked steadily down the central aisle beneath the catwalks, his dark eyes fixed on the traitor above.
"My father built this syndicate on honor, Marco," Rocco said coldly. "You built yours on the blood of starving children. You are a disease in this city, and tonight, I cure it."
"Die, you bastard!" Marco screamed, swinging his rifle down and opening fire.
RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!
Sparks erupted from the iron pillars as Rocco dove behind a heavy steel slag bucket. Returning fire with terrifying accuracy, Rocco’s bullets chipped the metal railing inches from Marco’s head, forcing him to scramble backward along the narrow catwalk.
Rocco didn't wait. He leaped onto the rusted steel ladder, scaling the vertical climb to the catwalks with blinding speed.
Marco fired frantically down the ladder, but his shattered shoulder made his aim wild. Rocco crested the top platform, grabbed the barrel of Marco’s rifle, and ripped it from his grip, tossing it over the railing into the abyss below.
Marco stumbled backward, pulling a long hunting knife from his belt with his good hand. "I'll carve you up, Rocco! I swear to God I'll kill you!"
He lunged with a desperate, wild slash.
Rocco stepped inside the blade’s arc, caught Marco’s wrist, and twisted it until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. The knife dropped to the metal grating.
Before Marco could scream, Rocco grabbed him by the throat and slammed him against the chain-link safety fence overlooking the hundred-foot drop to the concrete floor below.
Marco hung over the edge, the cold wind blowing rain through the shattered roof panels into his face. He looked down at the lethal drop, his arrogance completely dissolving into hysterical terror.
"Rocco... please!" Marco whimpered, clutching Rocco’s iron grip on his neck. "We’re brothers! We served under your father together! Mercy... for God's sake, mercy!"
Rocco looked down into the face of the man who had ordered Sarah beaten and Emma left to starve.
"Mercy is for human beings, Marco," Rocco whispered softly into his ear. "Not for rats."
Rocco released his grip.
A single, shrill scream echoed through the vast, empty foundry, ending abruptly with a heavy, final thud against the concrete far below.
Silence reclaimed the ironworks.

Rocco turned away from the railing, pulling his coat straight. He pulled out his phone and dialed Mateo.
"It’s over," Rocco said plainly. "Clean the site. Tell Sarah... I’m coming home."
