Chapter 3 - Inside the Fortress

That afternoon changed the trajectory of my entire life.

Mikhail didn't just pay off my back rent; he completely remodeled the Starlight Diner, bringing in top-tier commercial equipment, hiring dedicated staff, and clearing out the mounting debts that had kept me awake at night for years. But his gratitude came with an unexpected invitation—one that couldn't easily be refused.

"Misha has been asking about you," Mikhail had said as he handed me a new set of master keys to the diner. "He refuses to eat his breakfast unless it's made by the lady who makes the pancakes with extra butter. I want you to come to the estate tomorrow morning. As a private chef."

"I run a diner, Mr. Volkov, I'm not a Michelin-star culinary artist," I protested.

"Misha doesn't want a Michelin star," Mikhail replied, his dark eyes softening just a fraction. "He wants you."

And so, the next morning, I found myself driven in a black sedan through the iron security gates of the Volkov estate—a sprawling, heavily guarded fortress nestled along the wooded bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan.

The mansion was breathtaking, a mix of old-world European stone architecture and ultra-modern glass, surrounded by manicured gardens and patrolled by armed guards. But inside, it felt cold, cavernous, and lonely.

When Misha saw me walk into the massive, professional-grade stainless steel kitchen, he let out a joyful shout and ran across the marble floor, throwing his arms around my waist.

"Clara! You came!"

"Of course I came, kiddo," I laughed, crouching down to match his height. "Did you think I'd miss your breakfast?"

For the next few weeks, my life split into two worlds. I managed the Starlight Diner during the day, and three mornings a week, I cooked breakfast for Misha at the estate. Slowly, as I spent more time inside the fortress, I began to see the man behind the terrifying mafia legend.

Mikhail Volkov wasn't just a ruthless syndicate boss; he was a widowed father carrying the crushing weight of an empire built on blood and betrayal. His wife had passed away when Misha was a toddler, leaving him to navigate the treacherous waters of the Chicago underworld while trying to shield his son from the monsters he fought every single day.

One evening, I was wrapping up prep work in the estate kitchen long after Misha had gone to sleep, when Mikhail walked in. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking exhausted.

"You're working late," he noted, pouring himself a cup of black coffee.

"Just getting the inventory sorted for the diner," I replied, wiping my hands on a towel. "You know, Mikhail... you work too much. Even for a billionaire crime lord."

Mikhail paused, looking up from his mug. A rare, dry chuckle escaped his lips. "Most people in this city whisper my name in fear, Clara. You tease me about my work-life balance."

"Maybe because I don't care about your reputation," I said honestly, leaning against the counter. "I only care about the little boy upstairs, and the man who takes care of him."

Mikhail’s dark eyes locked onto mine, holding my gaze with an intensity that sent a sudden, unfamiliar flutter through my chest. The air between us shifted, charged with a sudden, undeniable intimacy.

Before either of us could speak, the estate’s security alarm began to wail—a shrill, ear-piercing shriek that echoed through the marble halls.
