Chapter 5 - The Syndicate’s Last Stand

The encrypted interrogation suite in the sub-basement of the estate was cold, sterile, and smelled of ozone and fear.

Bound to a heavy steel chair beneath the harsh fluorescent lights was the sole surviving mercenary from the night’s breach. His tactical vest was torn, and a deep bruise stained his jaw where Viktor had subdued him.

Mikhail stood in the center of the room, leaning against the edge of a metal table. He wasn't yelling. He wasn't threatening. He just stared at the captive with a terrifying, absolute stillness that was infinitely worse than physical violence.

"Who sent you?" Mikhail asked softly.

The mercenary spat blood onto the concrete floor, sneering. "You can't touch me, Volkov. Marcus Kane and the South Side Syndicate are backing us. You take me out, and a dozen more will burn this estate to the ground."

Marcus Kane. The name hung in the damp air like a death sentence. Kane was the ruthless head of the rival cartel who had been trying to seize control of Chicago’s shipping ports for over a year—the very same man who had ordered the hit on Mikhail’s family months ago.

"Kane thinks I'm vulnerable because of my son," Mikhail said, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "He thinks attacking my home will make me surrender my territory."

"He knows about the boy, Volkov," the mercenary laughed darkly. "He knows everything. And next time, there won't be a kitchen maid around to save him."

A dark shadow crossed Mikhail’s face. He straightened up, stepping toward the captive.

I stepped out from the observation hallway, pushing open the heavy metal door. "Mikhail. Stop."

Mikhail turned, his dark eyes flashing. "Clara, get out of here. This isn't for you to see."

"It is for me to see," I said, walking right up to him and placing a hand on his arm. The tension in his muscles was like coiled steel. "If you kill him in this room, you become the monster Kane wants the world to believe you are. And you prove that Misha isn't safe here."

Mikhail stared down at my hand resting on his arm, breathing heavily. The sheer, primal rage inside him warred with the quiet reason I offered. Slowly, his fingers unclenched from fists.

He looked back at the mercenary, then signaled to Viktor. "Lock him in the vault. Call the federal marshals we have on our payroll. Let's see how Marcus Kane likes federal racketeering charges."

As Viktor dragged the screaming captive out of the room, Mikhail turned to me. He backed me gently against the cool concrete wall, trapping me between his arms, his chest heaving with lingering adrenaline.

"You walk into the middle of gunfights, you stop me from crossing lines I can't take back," Mikhail murmured, his face inches from mine. "Who are you, Clara? Why aren't you afraid of me?"

"Because I know what it's like to be terrified, Mikhail," I whispered, holding his gaze. "And I know the difference between a monster and a father trying to protect his child."

Mikhail didn't hesitate anymore. He leaned down, capturing my lips in a fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of smoke, coffee, and redemption. It was a kiss born of survival, forged in the fires of a war we never asked to fight, but one we were ready to finish together.
