Chapter 4 - The Breach at the Estate

The red emergency strobe lights mounted along the ceiling of the mansion began flashing in rhythmic, frantic pulses.

Mikhail’s relaxed demeanor vanished in a microsecond. The mafia boss replaced the tired father; his posture hardened, his eyes turned to steel, and his hand dropped instinctively to the heavy Sig Sauer pistol holstered beneath his left arm.

"Stay in the kitchen," Mikhail ordered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, authoritative register. "Lock the steel security shutters from the wall panel."

"What’s happening?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Perimeter breach," Mikhail said, striding toward the heavy oak doors. "Sector Four. Someone just bypassed the lakefront electric gates."

"Misha!" I gasped, realizing the boy’s bedroom was on the second floor facing the western wing—directly above Sector Four.

"Viktor has him," Mikhail said, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone as he sprinted down the corridor. "Lock yourself in!"

Instead of following his orders, adrenaline took over. I knew the layout of the estate better than most of the guards because Misha and I had explored every nook and cranny while playing hide-and-seek the week before. If the intruders were coming through the western wing, the service stairwell was the fastest route to the second floor.

I hit the manual override button on the kitchen wall, dropping the heavy steel blast shutter halfway before slipping underneath it.

The mansion hallways were eerily quiet, save for the pulsing red strobe lights and the distant sound of shouting near the grand foyer. I raced up the back stairs, my breathing ragged, my hands trembling as I reached the second-floor landing.

As I rounded the corner toward Misha’s bedroom, the doors flew open.

Viktor, Mikhail’s massive, stone-faced security chief, was carrying Misha in his arms, shielding the boy’s head. But right behind them, emerging from the shadow of the gallery, was a man in tactical black gear holding a silenced submachine gun, leveling it straight at Viktor's back.

"Viktor, down!" I screamed.

Without thinking, I grabbed a heavy, antique brass candlestick from a mahogany side table and hurled it with all my might. It struck the mercenary squarely in the side of his helmet, throwing his aim off just enough as he pulled the trigger.

Pfft-pfft.

The silenced bullets punched through the drywall inches from Viktor’s head.

Viktor dropped to one knee, spinning around with lightning speed, and fired his own weapon twice, neutralizing the intruder before he could recover.

"Miss Clara!" Viktor yelled, his eyes wide with shock as he grabbed Misha tighter. "Get down!"

Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed from the main staircase. Mikhail appeared, his weapon drawn, his eyes scanning the corridor like an apex predator. When he saw Misha safe in Viktor’s arms, his relief was instantaneous—followed immediately by pure, unadulterated fury when he spotted me standing unprotected in the hallway.

"What the hell are you doing out of the kitchen?" Mikhail barked, rushing over and pulling me behind his shoulder.

"I saved your chief of security's life with an antique candlestick," I shot back, my voice shaking with adrenaline. "You're welcome, Mr. Volkov."

Mikhail stared at me, the anger on his face melting away into a profound, stunned realization. He grabbed my arm gently, checking to make sure I wasn't hurt.

"You're entirely fearless, Clara," he breathed, his voice rough. "And it's going to get you killed."

"Not tonight," I said, looking up into his eyes. "Because you're here to make sure it doesn't."
