Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the SystemThe neon sign of the 24-hour diner buzzed rhythmically against the damp pavement as Emily stepped out of the cab. Inside, sitting in a cracked red vinyl booth near the back, was Megan Brooks, wearing a bulky gray hoodie that completely altered her corporate silhouette.

Emily slid into the booth across from her, her eyes sharp. "Talk. Why did you risk your job—and probably your freedom—to warn me?"
Megan nervously stirred her lukewarm coffee with a plastic spoon. "Because I saw what happened to your predecessor, Mrs. Emily. Or rather, I saw the paperwork. Blake doesn't just discard people; he destroys them when they become inconvenient. And three weeks ago, I found out why he needed twenty-eight million dollars so badly."
Emily leaned forward, her elbows resting on the sticky laminate table. "What are you talking about? What twenty-eight million?"
"It’s not just public contract embezzlement," Megan whispered, glancing around to ensure no one was listening. "Apex Works isn't just a shell company to frame you. It’s a conduit routing funds directly to an overseas trust managed by someone else in the family. Someone higher up than Blake."
Before Megan could elaborate, the diner’s television screen flickered with a breaking news bulletin across the local network: “DEVELOPER MAGNATE BLAKE MERCER REPORTS MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT BY ESTRANGED WIFE; POLICE SEEK SUSPECT IN CORPO-FRAUD SCANDAL.”
Emily’s face flashed across the screen next to a mugshot taken from her old company ID badge—the exact badge Blake had forced her to turn in two months ago.
"They’re moving fast," Emily muttered, her expression chillingly calm. "He didn't just want me arrested; he wanted me hunted so I couldn't defend myself in court."

"We need to go deeper than just proving your innocence," Megan urged, sliding a cracked flash drive across the table. "That drive contains every digital signature log, every wire transfer receipt from Apex Works, and the server access keys to Blake’s private terminal. But to crack it, we need someone who knows the internal architecture of Summit’s servers better than Blake does."
Emily stared at the small black piece of plastic. A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of her mouth. "I built those servers. And I know the one backdoor Blake was too arrogant to ever delete."
