Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn at DawnBy 3:00 AM, Emily and Megan had set up a makeshift command center in Emily’s cramped Queens apartment. The hum of an old laptop fan filled the quiet room as Emily plugged in Megan’s flash drive. Lines of green code cascaded down the dark screen, reflecting off Emily’s focused, unblinking eyes.

"He modified the ledger metadata to make it look like you logged in from your personal IP address in Queens last Tuesday," Megan pointed out, leaning over Emily’s shoulder. "Can we trace the real IP?"

"Better," Emily replied, her fingers flying across the keyboard with rhythmic precision. "Blake was so eager to lock me away that he used his personal admin override key to authorize the final twenty-eight million dollar transfer. He forgot that every master override leaves a digital fingerprint tied to his personal encrypted device."

She hit a final keystroke. A folder popped up on the screen, revealing not just the false embezzlement files against her, but a massive web of offshore accounts, tax evasions, and illicit land acquisitions spanning the tri-state area.

But as Emily dug deeper into the financial architecture of Apex Works, a chilling realization stopped her dead in her tracks. The ultimate beneficiary of the twenty-eight million dollars wasn't Blake. Blake was merely the frontman—the ambitious, ruthless executor of a much larger, generational scheme.

The funds were being funneled directly into a master trust controlled by Victoria Mercer—Blake’s mother, the matriarch of the family, and the woman who had orchestrated Emily’s social and financial isolation from the very first day she married into the dynasty.

"It was never just Blake," Emily whispered, a cold fury settling deep in her chest. "Victoria wanted Summit completely cleansed of anyone who knew too much about their family’s original wealth. Framing me solved two problems: it hid their embezzlement by pinning it on an outsider, and it permanently removed me from the children's lives."

Megan stared at her in shock. "What do we do now? If Victoria is involved, local law enforcement won't touch this without federal backing. They own half the judges in this state."

Emily closed the laptop with a sharp snap. "Then we don't go to the local police. We take it straight to the federal grand jury scheduled to review Summit’s public contracts on Monday morning. And we hand them the evidence package wrapped in a bow they can't ignore."
