Chapter 5 - The Gala and the Grand JuryMonday morning arrived with a blinding autumn sun reflecting off the glass facade of the Manhattan Federal Courthouse. Inside, the grand jury room was packed with journalists, corporate analysts, and high-powered legal teams anticipating the high-profile indictment of Emily Carter for corporate fraud.

Blake Mercer walked up the courthouse steps flanked by two expensive defense attorneys, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a carefully practiced expression of public sorrow. Flashbulbs popped blindingly around him.

"It is a tragic day when someone you trusted for over a decade turns out to be driven by greed," Blake told reporters into a cluster of microphones, playing the betrayed husband to perfection. "I cooperated fully with federal investigators to ensure justice is served for Summit Development and our public partners."

Inside the courtroom, the federal prosecutor stood up to present the initial charges against Emily Carter. The judge adjusted his glasses, scanning the preliminary files provided by Blake’s legal team.

"Does the defense or the accused have any preliminary statements before we enter the formal arraignment?" the judge asked, looking toward the empty defendant’s table.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

All heads turned. Walking down the center aisle wasn't a desperate, broken woman hiding from the law. Emily Carter walked with her head held high, dressed in a sharp, slate-gray pantsuit that commanded the room, flanked not by a public defender, but by two senior federal marshals and Arthur Vance, the most formidable corporate litigator in the Northeast.

Blake’s face drained of all color. He half-stood from his seat at the prosecutor’s table, stammering, "Your Honor! What is she doing here? She’s a fugitive!"

"Sit down, Mr. Mercer," the judge commanded sharply. "Counsel, state your appearance."

Arthur Vance stepped up to the podium, his voice echoing cleanly through the chamber. "May it please the court, Arthur Vance representing Emily Carter. We move for an immediate dismissal of all charges, accompanied by a motion for a federal injunction against Summit Development, Blake Mercer, and primary beneficiary Victoria Mercer for systemic wire fraud, perjury, and the illegal diversion of twenty-eight million dollars in public funds."

Chaos erupted in the courtroom as reporters began whispering frantically. Blake spun around to look at his legal team, whose jaws had dropped in utter disbelief.

"That’s absurd!" Blake shouted, losing his composure entirely. "She forged those documents! Her fingerprints are all over the system!"

"Actually, Mr. Mercer," Emily spoke up, stepping smoothly to the podium alongside her attorney. She opened a sleek leather folio and placed a cryptographic hard drive on the clerk’s desk. "My fingerprints were indeed on the system—because you hired me as a cleaner to plant them there. But you forgot one crucial detail when you tried to frame me: you used your personal admin override to execute the transfer. And digital footprints, unlike forged signatures, never lie."
