Chapter 2 - The Silent HouseWhile Emma rested in the hospital, oblivious to the gathering storm, back at the Reeves estate, the atmosphere was thick with cold tension.

Daniel Reeves paced across the polished marble floor of the foyer, his phone pressed tightly to his ear for the fourth time that hour. "No answer," he muttered, running a hand through his thinning hair. "She’s screening my calls again. Typical Emma. Always making a scene out of nothing."

Irene sat regally on the velvet living room sofa, sipping a cup of chamomile tea as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. She adjusted her diamond earrings with a flick of her wrist, her expression thoroughly unimpressed.

"Stop fussing, Daniel," Irene scoffed, setting her teacup down with a sharp clink. "The girl threw herself into the shallow end of the pool for attention. It's a textbook manipulation tactic. She knew the divorce papers were being signed tomorrow morning, and she wanted to squeeze out one last bit of drama—and financial leverage—before I finally got her out of our lives."

"Mom, she hit her head pretty hard," Daniel said, a flicker of genuine unease crossing his features. "The paramedics said she was unconscious for a few minutes. And... well, what if she was telling the truth? What if she really is pregnant?"

Irene stood up, marching over to her son and jabbing a manicured finger into his chest. "Listen to me, Daniel! After ten years of barren medical bills and expensive fertility treatments that went absolutely nowhere? Please. Women like Emma do not suddenly conceive miraculous heirs twenty-four hours before a lucrative property division is finalized. It’s a sham. A desperate, pathetic lie."

Daniel wanted to believe his mother. It was easier to believe her. Believing Irene meant he didn't have to face the crushing guilt of standing by while his mother pushed his wife into a body of water. It meant he didn't have to look in the mirror and see a coward.

"You're right," Daniel sighed, nodding to appease her. "The divorce lawyer is already drawing up the final addendums. Tomorrow at 10:00 AM, the judge signs off. Clean break. No alimony, no property split, nothing."

"Good," Irene smiled coldly, picking up her tea once more. "And make sure she knows she’s not welcome back in this house to collect her things. I’ll have the staff pack up her pathetic little wardrobe in trash bags and leave them on the curb."

Neither of them knew that Emma’s legal counsel—a shark of a family lawyer named Harrison Vance—had already been notified of the hospital admission. And Harrison didn't see an unfortunate accident. He saw aggravated assault, a reckless endangerment charge, and a multi-million-dollar liability that was about to explode right in the Reeves family's faces.
