Chapter 4 - The Courtroom ShowdownThe family court of Metro District was dim, echoing with the shuffling of papers and the low murmur of lawyers discussing settlements.

Daniel and Irene sat at the petitioner’s table, looking entirely relaxed. Irene wore a designer Chanel suit, her chin held high, radiating absolute confidence. Daniel flicked through notifications on his phone, occasionally whispering a joke to his mother.

Across the aisle, Harrison Vance sat alone at the respondent’s table, a thick, leather-bound briefcase resting neatly before him.

A few minutes before ten, the oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

All heads turned.

Emma walked in. She was dressed in a sharp, tailored navy maternity dress that accentuated her radiant glow. She didn't walk with the timid, hesitant steps of a discarded wife; her posture was straight, her head held high, and her eyes flashed with an unyielding, fierce light. She leaned slightly on Harrison’s assistant for support, but every movement radiated supreme confidence.

Irene’s smug smile faltered. She leaned over to Daniel. "Why is she here? I thought her lawyer was handling this via mail."

Daniel frowned, shifting uncomfortably in his seat as Emma took her place at the defense table, just feet away from them.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Evelyn Vance," the bailiff announced.

Judge Vance adjusted her spectacles, scanning the case files before her. "Please be seated. We are here today for the final dissolution of marriage in the matter of Reeves v. Reeves. Counsel, are both parties present?"

"Yes, Your Honor," Daniel’s attorney, a sleek corporate lawyer named Marcus Sterling, stood up smoothly. "We have reached an amicable—well, a final agreement regarding the dissolution of assets. My clients are prepared to sign off on the zero-alimony, zero-property disposition, as stipulated in the original prenuptial agreement."

Judge Vance raised an eyebrow, looking past Sterling toward the defense table. "Mr. Vance? Does your client concur?"

Harrison stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket. "Actually, Your Honor, we move to amend our response entirely. Furthermore, we are filing a series of emergency motions regarding fraudulent asset concealment, severe domestic endangerment, and a substantial modification of financial support due to a major material change in circumstances."

A collective murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery.

Sterling scoffed, standing up abruptly. "Objection, Your Honor! This is entirely out of order! A prenuptial agreement was signed ten years ago, explicitly waiving all spousal support and property claims in the event of a divorce. They cannot simply ambush us with new motions on the day of finalization!"

"It’s not an ambush, Counselor," Harrison said coolly, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out several pristine, heavy-duty document packets. "It is a legal reality. First, clause 14, section B of the very prenuptial agreement your firm drafted explicitly states that if either party—or their immediate household members—inflicts physical harm or endangers the life of the spouse during the marriage, the agreement is rendered null and void."

Harrison walked forward, handing copies to the judge and the opposing counsel. "Two weeks ago, Mrs. Irene Reeves physically assaulted my client, shoving her forcefully into a swimming pool while she was visibly pregnant. We have police reports, medical records from Saint Jude Memorial Hospital, and HD security camera footage confirming the assault."

Daniel went entirely pale. He whipped his head toward his mother. "Mom? What is he talking about? You pushed her?"

Irene’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. "It was a tap! She tripped! It’s all a lie!"

"Quiet in my courtroom!" Judge Vance slammed her gavel down, the sharp crack echoing off the wood-paneled walls. She quickly scanned the medical records handed up by Harrison, her eyes widening as she read the obstetrical notes. "Mrs. Reeves... pregnant?"

"Yes, Your Honor," Harrison said clearly, turning to face the gallery. "Not only is my client pregnant, but medical documentation confirms she is carrying twins. Conceived naturally, verified by multiple specialists. Furthermore, our financial investigation over the past week has uncovered that Mr. Daniel Reeves has systematically funneled over 1.2 million dollars of marital assets into offshore accounts under his mother’s name in anticipation of this divorce—a clear violation of financial disclosure laws."

The courtroom went dead silent.

Daniel slumped back into his chair, his mouth hanging open, trembling as the sheer magnitude of what he and his mother had done came crashing down around them.
