Chapter 3 - The Broken Fortress

The pediatric and adult trauma wing of St. Jude’s Hospital hummed with sterile, low-frequency fluorescent light.

I sat in a vinyl chair pulled flush against Hannah’s hospital bed, holding her left hand between both of mine. The IV line dripped warm fluids into her vein, and a heated blanket unit hummed softly beside us, slowly bringing her core body temperature back to ninety-eight point six degrees.

Dr. Aris, a sharp-eyed neurologist, stood at the foot of the bed holding her digital charts.

"She’s out of immediate danger from hypothermia, Captain Carter," Dr. Aris explained quietly. "Her internal organs responded well to the core rewarming. But the physical trauma is concerning."

My grip on Hannah’s hand tightened slightly. "What trauma?"

Dr. Aris swiped through a series of X-rays on her screen. "She has defensive contusions along her ribs, a hairline fracture in her right radius—consistent with someone twisting her arm behind her back with extreme force—and severe malnutrition. Captain... her bloodwork shows she has lost nearly twenty-five pounds over the last six months. She was severely dehydrated when she arrived."

A cold, suffocating rage filled my chest. Twenty-five pounds.

Every month while I was overseas, I had wired three thousand dollars directly to the house account to ensure Hannah had everything she needed. Every week, my mother assured me that Hannah was eating well, shopping, and resting.

They hadn't just mistreated her. They had starved her. They had treated my wife like a prisoner in her own home.

A soft groan came from the bed.

Hannah’s fingers twitched inside mine. Her eyes fluttered open—dark, expressive brown eyes that had once been filled with laughter, now clouded with fear and confusion. She looked at the sterile white ceiling, then turned her head slowly toward me.

She froze.

"L-Lucas...?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath. She reached out with her bruised right hand, touching my face, her trembling fingers tracing the line of my jaw, the military haircut, the green wool dress uniform I was still wearing. "Am I... am I dreaming? Are you real?"

"I'm real, sweetheart," I choked out, tears finally breaking past my discipline, falling onto her hand. "I'm right here. I came home early. You're in the hospital. You're safe."

Hannah’s chest began to heave as ragged, heartbreaking sobs spilled from her throat. She pulled herself up, burying her face into the crook of my neck. I wrapped my arms around her fragile frame, holding her tightly, feeling how terrifyingly light she had become.

"I tried, Lucas..." she wept bitterly, clutching my uniform shirt. "I tried so hard to be a good wife. I cleaned the house every day. I cooked for them. But your mother... she took my phone six months ago. She took my car keys. She said if I told you anything, she would use your father’s legal connections to ruin your military career and have you court-martialed..."

"Shh... quiet, my love," I soothed her, rubbing her back, my blood burning like liquid fire. "They lied to you, Hannah. They have no power over me. They have no power over anyone."

"Today... today your mother brought out legal papers," Hannah whimpered, looking up at me with tear-filled eyes. "She told me you were extending your tour overseas and that you had ordered her to take ownership of the house. She told me to sign over my name and pack my bags for the cellar. When I refused... when I saw your father’s name forged on the document... Paige grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the door. Your mother pushed me down the porch steps..."

"And they locked the door behind you," I finished the sentence for her, my voice dropping into an icy, deadly calm.

Hannah nodded slowly, shivering at the memory. "I couldn't breathe. The ice was so cold... I thought I was going to die before I saw you again."

"You are never going back to that house while they are in it, Hannah," I promised her, looking straight into her eyes with unshakeable conviction. "And by tomorrow morning, they will realize that the house they thought was theirs... never belonged to them at all."

The door to the hospital room opened softly. Mason Ward stepped inside, holding a thick stack of finalized legal documents and an encrypted flash drive.

"Lucas," Mason said gravely. "Officer Miller just finished analyzing the security footage. The arrest warrants have been signed by the District Attorney."

I looked down at Hannah, kissing her hands gently. "Stay with the nurses, sweetheart. Mason and I have a delivery to make."
