Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Eleanor

At five-thirty in the morning, the snow had stopped falling, leaving the Carter estate shrouded in a thick, eerie blanket of white silence.

Inside the grand living room, the stone fireplace crackled merrily. Eleanor sat on the plush velvet sofa, wearing a silk robe, sipping tea from a china cup. Paige was sitting at the mahogany dining table, typing furiously on her laptop, attempting to clear out the shared banking accounts before morning.

"Don't worry, Mother," Paige said arrogantly, waving her hand. "Mason Ward is just bluffing to protect his reputation. Dad’s will clearly stated that the estate passes to his surviving spouse. Once we get Lucas away from that manipulative girl, he’ll fall right back into line. He always obeys you."

"Of course he does," Eleanor said coldly, setting her teacup down with a soft clink. "Lucas is a soldier. He understands chain of command. I raised him to be loyal to this family above all else. That little girl was a temporary mistake. Once we file the emergency conservatorship papers today, we will have full control over his military pension and your father’s trust."

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The heavy oak front door rattled violently under three sharp, thunderous knocks that echoed through the high-ceilinged house.

Eleanor frowned, annoyed. "Paige, go see who that is. If it’s those dramatic paramedics again, tell them we are calling our personal security."

Paige walked over to the foyer and pulled open the heavy wooden door.

Standing on the porch was not a paramedic.

It was Officer Miller, accompanied by four uniformed police deputies, two detectives from the Special Victims Unit, and a city social worker. Behind them stood Lucas and Mason Ward.

Paige took a step back, her mouth falling open. "What... what is the meaning of this?!"

Officer Miller stepped inside without asking for permission, followed by his officers. "Eleanor Vance-Carter and Paige Carter. We are executing a search warrant and felony arrest warrants issued by the 3rd District Criminal Court."

Eleanor rose from the velvet sofa like a queen whose palace had been invaded, her eyes flashing with rage. "Are you insane?! On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of Felony Domestic Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Imprisonment, and Criminal Forgery," Officer Miller announced, pulling out two pairs of heavy steel handcuffs.

"Forgery?!" Eleanor shrieked. "This is my house! I am the widow of Richard Carter!"

"You were his wife, Eleanor," Mason Ward stepped forward, stepping into the warm glow of the fireplace, pulling a heavy blue folder from his briefcase. "But you were never his heir."

Eleanor froze. The air in the room seemed to vanish. "What... what did you say?"

Mason opened the blue folder, laying three notarized documents flat on the mahogany dining table—right beside the open bottle of stolen scotch and the half-eaten roast chicken.

"Three years ago, before Richard passed away," Mason explained with absolute legal precision, "he realized that your gambling debts in Atlantic City and Paige’s lavish spending were threatening the financial survival of this family. He knew that if he left this estate to you, you would mortgage it to the hilt within two years."

Eleanor’s face went chalky white. "Richard... Richard loved me! He wouldn't do that!"

"He loved his family, Eleanor," Mason corrected her ruthlessly. "Which is why he established the Carter Family Irrevocable Trust. He transferred full, sole ownership of this thirty-acre estate, the main residence, the wine cellar, the investment portfolios, and every liquid account into the trust."

"And who is the trustee?!" Paige screamed, her voice cracking with sheer panic.

Mason turned his head, pointing a pen directly at me.

"Lucas is the sole trustee," Mason revealed. "He holds absolute administrative power over every dime, every room, and every blade of grass on this property. And the designated sole beneficiary of the trust—the person who holds the lifetime right of residency and financial support—is not you, Eleanor."

Mason looked Eleanor straight in the eyes.

"The sole beneficiary is Hannah Carter."
