Chapter 6 - A Home Built on Love (Happy Ending)

Six Months Later
The warm summer sun shone brightly over the rolling green hills of the Carter estate.
The snow had long since melted, replaced by vibrant beds of red roses, blooming lavender, and lush green grass. The grand wraparound porch had been freshly painted white, and the front windows were thrown open, letting in the sweet, gentle breeze of late July.
The old, cold atmosphere of tyranny and fear that had plagued the house for decades was gone forever.
Sitting on a wooden rocking chair on the porch was Hannah.
She looked radiant. The pale, hollow look of starvation was completely gone, replaced by a healthy, glowing complexion, her dark hair shining in the sunlight. She wore a soft yellow summer dress, her right wrist completely healed, her eyes filled with a peace she had never known before.
Beside her on the porch table sat a fresh plate of homemade cinnamon rolls and two iced teas.
I walked out through the screen door, wearing dark jeans and a plain gray T-shirt, carrying a wooden tray of fresh strawberries from our garden.
"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" I asked, leaning down to kiss her soft lips, resting my hand gently over her shoulder.
"I feel like I'm living in a dream, Lucas," Hannah smiled warmly, leaning her head against my chest as I sat down beside her. "I still wake up sometimes expecting to hear Eleanor’s voice yelling from the hallway."
"She’s never coming back, Hannah," I reminded her softly.
The legal hammer had fallen swiftly and without mercy upon Eleanor and Paige.
Confronted with the high-definition security camera recordings showing Paige dragging Hannah across the driveway and Eleanor locking the door while Hannah lay unconscious, both women had agreed to a plea deal to avoid federal prison time.
Eleanor had been sentenced to three years of probation, mandatory community service, and ordered to pay two hundred thousand dollars in restitution for Hannah’s medical bills and emotional distress—a sum Mason Ward collected by liquidating Eleanor’s private jewelry collection.
Paige had received eighteen months of probation, lost her administrative license, and was currently working two retail jobs to pay off her own legal debts, living in a tiny one-bedroom apartment on the far side of the state.
Both women had been slapped with a permanent, lifetime restraining order. If either of them set foot within five miles of the Carter estate, they would be immediately remanded to state prison.
They were disowned, broke, and completely forgotten by the high-society circles they had once prized above their own humanity.
"Mason called this morning," I told Hannah, taking a sip of my iced tea. "The final court approval for the trust restructuring came through. The property is now officially registered under your name as sole lifetime owner. Nobody can ever challenge your right to be here."
Hannah looked out over the vast, peaceful lawn, a tear of pure gratitude glistening in her eye. She turned her head, looking into my eyes with deep, unshakeable love.
"I don't care about the property, Lucas," Hannah whispered, taking my calloused hand and pressing it against her heart. "I only care about the man who came back across the world to save my life."
"I’ll always come back for you, Hannah," I said, pulling her into my arms, holding her close as the warm summer wind rustled through the trees.
May you like
For two years, I had dreamed of coming home to peace.
It had taken a storm, a trial of fire, and the destruction of a toxic past, but as I sat on that porch with my wife in my arms, listening to the gentle rustle of the leaves, I knew that I was finally, truly home.
