Chapter 1 - The Altitude of Betrayal

At thirty thousand feet, the air inside the cabin of Flight 405 felt thin, clinical, and completely devoid of warmth. Claire Morgan stood in the narrow aisle separating first class from the rest of the aircraft, her fingers lightly gripping the headrest of row four. Her white linen blazer was perfectly pressed, a stark contrast to the absolute wreckage of the marriage she had left behind in row fourteen.
Beneath her, the engines hummed a steady, vibrating bassline that seemed to sync with the icy, rhythmic beating of her heart. The shock had already come and gone in the span of a single second. In its place was a crystalline, terrifying clarity.
Dr. Ryan Morgan—the man who had promised to love her in sickness and in health, the man whose student loans she had helped pay off during his early residency years, the man who had texted her “Boarding for Portland now” less than an hour ago—was staring up at her. His jaw had dropped slightly, his lips parted but completely paralyzed. The charming sales executive who could smooth talk international logistics boards looked like a boy caught stealing from a collection plate.
Beside him, Chloe had bolted upright, her face flushing a deep, mottled red before draining into a sickly gray. The cream coat she wore, the one Claire had noticed in a casual corporate gallery post six months ago, was now bunched awkwardly around her waist. She looked frantically between Ryan and Claire, her manicured fingers clawing at the armrest as if searching for an escape hatch at cruising altitude.
"Claire," Ryan finally managed to choke out, his voice a low, strangled rasp. He instinctively tried to move his hand away from Chloe’s thigh, but the movement was so jerky, so guilty, that it only highlighted the intimacy they had shared just moments prior. "Claire, what... what are you doing on this flight? You said you were handling the Denver supplier next week."
"The supplier moved the meeting up, Ryan," Claire said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying carrying power that caused the elderly couple across the aisle to lower their tablets and look over. "And thank goodness they did. Otherwise, I would have missed your executive retreat to 'Portland.'"
"Look, it's not what it looks like," Ryan whispered frantically, his eyes darting toward the front galley where a flight attendant was preparing the beverage cart. "Chloe and I... we had an emergency client meeting in Denver. The Portland trip got rerouted at the last minute. I was going to text you when we landed—"
"Save it," Claire interrupted. She leaned down slightly, her face inches from his. The scent of his expensive cologne—the one she had bought him for their fifth anniversary—mixed with Chloe’s heavy, sweet perfume. It made her stomach turn, but her eyes remained fixed and frozen. "I watched you lift her bags. I watched her sleep in your lap. And I heard you accept her as your wife when the crew offered a blanket."
Chloe whimpered, pulling the cream coat over her chest. "Mrs. Morgan, please, it’s a misunderstanding—"
"Do not speak to me," Claire said, not even granting Chloe the courtesy of her gaze. Her target was Ryan, and Ryan alone.
She calmly reached into her designer tote bag, pulling out her personal smartphone. Ryan watched the movement, his eyes widening as he realized she wasn't reaching for tissues or a boarding pass.
"Claire, don't do anything crazy," Ryan pleaded, his corporate panic finally setting in. He knew what Claire was capable of when she was angry, but he had never seen her like this. He had never seen her completely calm. "We're on a plane. Let's talk about this when we get to the hotel. We can sort this out."
"Oh, we are sorting this out right now, Ryan," Claire whispered. She unlocked her phone, her thumb hovering over a contact she had hoped she would never have to call. "You forgot one crucial thing when you decided to use your corporate expense account to fund your little mistresses’ first-class lifestyle."
"What?" Ryan stammered, his brow furrowing.
May you like
"You forgot that I am the Operations Director of Vanguard Construction," Claire said, a small, predatory smile touching the corners of her lips. "And more importantly, you forgot that my father is the majority shareholder of the logistics firm you work for. You didn't just cheat on your wife, Ryan. You cheated on your employer."
Without waiting for his response, Claire pressed the dial button. The phone began to ring, routing through the aircraft’s high-speed satellite Wi-Fi.
