Chapter 2 - The Groundwork of Ruin

The phone rang twice before a deep, authoritative voice boomed through Claire’s wireless earpiece.
"Claire, sweetheart? Aren't you supposed to be in the air?"
"I am, Dad," Claire said, her eyes locked onto Ryan’s face. She watched the realization hit him like a physical blow. His skin went from pale to completely translucent. "I'm currently at thirty thousand feet, sitting ten rows behind my husband and his secretary, Chloe."
There was a long, heavy pause on the other end of the line. Arthur Vance was a self-made billionaire who had built Vanguard Construction from a single crane operation into a multi-state conglomerate. He loved his daughter fiercely, and he had always harbored a quiet, unspoken suspicion about the charming sales executive who had swept Claire off her feet during her late twenties.
"Tell me you're joking, Claire," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register that meant legal and financial warfare was imminent.
"I'm looking right at them, Dad. They’re in first class. I’m in economy. He used the company’s priority booking system to upgrade their tickets under the guise of the regional development project." Claire took a slow, deliberate breath. "I need you to contact the corporate compliance team at Logan Logistics. Lock his accounts. Freeze his corporate cards before this plane touches down in Denver. And call Marcus at the law firm. Tell him the pre-nuptial agreement is activated."
"Claire, no! Hang up!" Ryan yelled, trying to unbuckle his seatbelt, but the Fasten Seatbelt sign flashed red above him as the plane hit a pocket of minor turbulence. The sudden jolt threw him back into his seat, leaving him tangled in his safety strap.
"Consider it done, baby," Arthur said on the phone. "I’m calling the board right now. By the time that plane opens its doors, Ryan won't even have a parking space left at the office. Do you need me to have a car waiting for you at DIA?"
"Yes, please. Have a secure transport ready. I have a supplier meeting to run, and then I’m clearing out the apartment," Claire said. "I love you, Dad."
"I love you too, Claire. Stay strong."
Claire ended the call and slipped the phone back into her blazer pocket. The flight attendant finally arrived with the first-class beverage cart, looking between the standing Claire and the visibly panicked couple in seats 2A and 2B.
"Is everything all right here, ma'am?" the flight attendant asked, her eyes lingering on Ryan’s terrified expression.

"Everything is perfect," Claire replied smoothly. She looked down at Chloe, whose eyes were filled with tears of pure panic. "Enjoy the first-class service, Chloe. It’s the last time either of you will ever afford it."
With a final, devastating nod, Claire turned on her heel and walked back down the aisle. The passengers in premium economy watched her pass, their whispers filling the cabin. Claire sat back down in row fourteen, pulled her window shade down, and let out a long, slow breath. Her hands were steady. The tears would not come today. She had a company to protect, and an empire to reclaim.
