Chapter 5 - The Legal Meatgrinder

The divorce and criminal trials proceeded with a terrifying efficiency that only a multi-billion-dollar legal team could command. Because Claire had been smart enough to include an ironclad infidelity and corporate protection clause in their pre-nuptial agreement, Ryan was completely stripped of any claim to the Vance family fortune.

The judge ruled entirely in Claire’s favor, awarding her sole ownership of their shared investments, the San Diego vacation property, and ordering Ryan to pay back every dollar of corporate funds he had embezzled during his tenure at Logan Logistics.

By the time the final sentencing hearing arrived four months later, Ryan had lost everything. His name had been dragged through the financial press, rendering him completely unemployable in the logistics and corporate sales sectors.

Claire sat in the front row of the gallery, her mother’s hand resting over hers. She watched as the judge banged the gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

"For the charges of grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and falsifying financial documents," the judge announced, "this court sentences you, Ryan Morgan, to four years at the state correctional facility, followed by three years of supervised probation and full financial restitution."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead Ryan away in handcuffs, he turned back to look at Claire one last time. His face was a mask of despair, realizing that the woman he had dismissed as 'insecure' had completely dismantled his existence from thirty thousand feet in the air.

Claire didn't smile. She didn't celebrate. She simply stood up, smoothed down her jacket, and walked out into the bright afternoon sun. The air outside the courthouse felt fresh, clean, and completely free of deception.
