PART 2: The Daughter Who Shouldn’t Have Survived

St. Jude’s ICU smelled like antiseptic and rain-soaked panic when I arrived.
Dr. Mitchell met me outside the surgical wing immediately.
“She’s stable for now,” he said quickly. “But this is fragile. One spike in pressure and we lose her.”
I didn’t answer.
I was already walking.
Inside the ICU room, Brooke looked smaller than I remembered.
Machines surrounded her like mechanical guardians holding back death by force.
Her face was still bruised.
But her eyes were open.
Barely.
When she saw me, her lips moved.
“Mom…”
I rushed to her side immediately.
“Don’t talk,” I said softly. “Save your strength.”
Her fingers twitched toward mine.
I took her hand carefully.
She flinched at first.
Then relaxed when she realized it was me.
Tears slid from her eyes immediately.
“Mom…” she whispered again. “They said… I ruined everything.”
My jaw tightened.
“No,” I said. “You didn’t ruin anything.”
Her breathing hitched.
“Trevor… he said I embarrassed them. His mother said I wasn’t… useful anymore.”
Something dark moved through my chest.
But I kept my voice calm.
“Where is the baby?” I asked gently.
Her eyes filled with panic.
“They said… they’re trying to save it.”
That was all she could say before exhaustion pulled her under again.
The monitor beeped faster.
A nurse rushed in.
“Her blood pressure is dropping!”
I stepped back immediately.
But I didn’t leave.
I just watched.
Because now I understood something clearly:
May you like
They didn’t just hurt her.
They tried to erase her completely.
