PART 4: What They Should Have Been Afraid Of All Along

I left without another word.
Because violence wasn’t the answer anymore.
Exposure was.
By morning, I had already contacted three people.
A federal investigator.
A hospital ethics board director.
And a journalist who owed me a favor from ten years ago.
By noon, the first documents were already moving.
Evidence of abuse requests.
Financial coercion.
Medical neglect reports.
Security footage from inside the estate.
By evening, the Vance empire was starting to crack.
At 9:17 PM, my phone rang.
Trevor.
I answered.
His voice wasn’t calm anymore.
“What did you do?”
I stood by the hospital window, watching Brooke sleep.
“I didn’t do anything,” I said. “You did.”
Silence.
Then panic.
“You’re destroying everything—”
“No,” I interrupted. “You already did that when you hit a pregnant woman with a golf club.”
A breath.
Then:
“She’s our family.”
I laughed once.
“No,” I said softly. “She was yours. Now she’s mine again.”
The call ended.
Behind me, a nurse entered quietly.
“She’s asking for you,” she said.
I walked to Brooke’s bedside.
She was awake again.
Weak.
But aware.
Her eyes found mine immediately.
“Mom…” she whispered.
I held her hand gently.
“I’m here.”
Her lips trembled.
“Is it over?”
I looked at her for a long moment.
Then nodded.
“Yes,” I said. “It’s over.”
Tears slid down her face.
But this time—
Not from pain.
From survival.
Outside the hospital, sirens were already approaching the Vance estate.
Not for revenge.
For arrest.
For truth.
For consequence.
And for the first time in days—
I didn’t feel fire in my hands.
May you like
Only stillness.
The kind that comes after justice finally begins to breathe.
