Chapter 1 - The Shattered IllusionThe sharp clatter of crystal hitting the stone patio broke the heavy silence of the Brentwood estate. Kaleb Cross stood frozen, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering into a thousand glittering shards at his feet. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him as pale as the white roses decorating the grand arches.

For a fraction of a second, the bustling engagement party—filled with investors, socialites, and laughing guests—seemed to vanish into a vacuum of absolute horror.
Kaleb didn't look at his bride-to-be. He didn't look at the expensive suits of his business associates. His eyes were locked entirely on the figure kneeling in the mud near the manicured lawn, soaked to the bone, clutching a faded canvas grocery bag against her chest.
“Mom?”
The single word tore from Kaleb’s throat, raw and disbelieving.
The laughter around the patio died instantly. Ashlyn Watson, who still held the garden hose with a triumphant smirk, blinked in sudden confusion. She turned her head slowly from Kaleb to the drenched woman kneeling in the grass, and then back to Kaleb.
“Kaleb, darling, what did you say?” Ashlyn laughed nervously, stepping forward with her designer heels clicking against the stone. “You must be joking. That... that old woman? She’s just a beggar who wandered off the street. Security should have dragged her out hours ago.”
Kaleb didn't answer her. He moved with a speed and fury that made the surrounding guests step back in alarm. Ignoring the damp grass, the mud, and his own immaculate tuxedo, Kaleb dropped straight to his knees beside his mother.
“Mom... oh, God. Look at you,” Kaleb choked out, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and volcanic rage. He reached out with shaking hands, gently brushing the dripping silver hair from her face, desperate to warm her frozen cheeks.
Beside them, Ashlyn’s mother, Kara Watson, rushed forward, waving a hand dismissively. “Kaleb, honey, get up from there! You’re ruining your custom suit over some deranged vagrant. Scott, call the police. She’s trespassing.”
“Shut your mouth,” Kaleb whispered. It wasn’t loud, but the sheer venom in his tone caused Kara to stumble backward as if she’d been struck.
Kaleb slowly rose to his feet, pulling his mother up with him. He positioned himself protectively in front of her, using his own body to shield her from the staring crowd. When he turned to face Ashlyn, his expression was completely devoid of the warmth she had grown accustomed to. It was the face of a ruthless corporate titan looking at a fatal liability.

“Kaleb?” Ashlyn’s voice finally wavered, a cold knot of dread twisting in her stomach. “What is going on? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“You asked if she expected a seat at the wedding,” Kaleb said, his voice echoing across the silent courtyard. “It’s her estate, Ashlyn. She owns every brick, every rose, and every square inch of this property. And this engagement party? It was being funded by the very woman you just soaked with a garden hose.”
