Chapter 2 - The UnravelingThe silence that followed Kaleb’s declaration was so absolute that the distant sound of ocean waves crashing against the cliffs could be heard miles away.

Ashlyn’s jaw dropped. She stared at Kaleb, then looked at the drenched woman standing quietly beside him, her calm, calculating eyes meeting Ashlyn’s panicked gaze.

“No... no, that’s impossible,” Ashlyn stammered, shaking her head frantically. “She’s wearing a thrift-store blouse! She has a canvas bag! She’s a—she’s a nobody!”

“Appearance is a choice, Ashlyn,” Kaleb’s mother finally spoke, her voice steady, clear, and dripping with an authority that commanded the entire courtyard. “Cruelty, however, is a revelation. And you revealed yours in less than two minutes.”

Scott Watson pushed his way through the stunned crowd, his face flushed red with a mix of embarrassment and rising panic. “Now hold on just a minute, Kaleb! This is a misunderstanding! Ashlyn was just trying to keep the estate secure. We didn't know—how could we have known she was—”

“You didn’t care to ask,” Kaleb interrupted, stepping forward until he was towering inches above his prospective father-in-law. “You judged a human being by the clothes on her back. You laughed at her humiliation. You threatened her with dismissal and police harassment when she was standing on her own land.”

“Kaleb, please!” Ashlyn dropped the garden hose, letting it hiss water uselessly onto the grass as she lunged forward, grabbing at the lapel of his ruined tuxedo. Tears welled in her eyes, perfectly timed and entirely rehearsed. “It was a joke! A silly mistake! I didn't mean it like that! Tell her I’m sorry!”

Kaleb slowly unclasped Ashlyn’s fingers from his jacket, one by one, as if removing a dirty rag.

“You’re sorry you got caught,” Kaleb said coldly. “You’re sorry your meal ticket and your high-society status just vanished into thin air. Security!”

Two senior estate guards, dressed in sharp black suits, instantly materialized from the shadows of the colonnade.

“Escort Ms. Watson and her family off the premises,” Kaleb ordered, his voice echoing over the quiet estate. “And ensure every single gift, bag, and personal belonging they brought is thrown out onto the public street where they belong.”

“You can’t do this to us!” Kara Watson shrieked, her upscale facade completely shattering into hysterical rage. “We are the Watsons! We made you relevant in this city!”

“You made yourselves irrelevant,” Kaleb replied flatly.

As security guards guided the protesting, weeping, and cursing Watsons toward the iron gates, the remaining guests began to quietly slip away into the night, desperate to distance themselves from the catastrophic collapse of the Brentwood engagement.
