Chapter 1: The Descent into the Pool and the Horrific Revelation

When a tipped champagne flute splashed golden liquid across my custom white silk shoe, Lenora gasped, immediately dropping to her knees with a cloth in hand.

"Stop," I commanded, my voice slicing through the evening air.

The laughter of my bridesmaids died instantly. Lenora looked up, her eyes wide with disbelief and a deep, burning shame. But driven by the greed that had always defined her, she slowly lowered herself entirely onto the damp flagstones in front of hundreds of VIP guests.

"That is exactly what you are paid for," I whispered, looking down at my mother's tormentor.

I should have walked away. The symbolic debt was paid. But when Lenora tried to stand, a familiar flicker of cruel defiance crossed her eyes, dragging me straight back to the dark, lonely hallways of my childhood. Before logic could intervene, my hand moved of its own accord, striking her across the face.

Lenora stumbled backward, catching her high heel on the raised stone border of the terrace, and plummeted backward into the deep end of the illuminated swimming pool. Shouts and screams erupted from the surrounding guests.

Heavy footsteps pounded against the stone. It was Julian, my groom, pushing frantically past the stunned crowd.

"What the hell are you doing?!" he roared, his face twisted in fury.

I rolled my eyes, lifting my chin and straightening my posture. "Relax, Julian. She’s just a maid."

Julian ignored me, staring down in absolute horror at the shivering, soaked woman clinging desperately to the pool ladder. The color drained from his face with terrifying speed.

"That’s... my mother," he breathed.

The air was sucked completely from my lungs. Lenora froze in the water, staring up in shock at the man I had just pledged my life to. I knew she was my father's mistress, and she knew I was his daughter. But the terrifying, incestuous web of our pasts revealed in this exact, horrific second meant that Julian and I—who had planned a future together—were inextricably tied to the very woman who had destroyed my family.
