Chapter 2: The Collapse of an Illusion

Julian didn't speak to me on the ride back to our penthouse. He spent the entire night locked in the guest suite attending to Lenora, who played the victim with practiced theatricality. I sat alone in the dark master bedroom, my wedding dress still zipped tightly around my ribs like a suffocating armor, replaying the sequence of events.

How had I missed the connection? Julian had always been evasive about his family background, claiming his mother lived abroad and that his father had passed away when he was young. It was a convenient fiction designed to hide the truth: he was the son of Lenora Voss, the home-wrecker who had broken my mother’s heart before she took her own life.

By dawn, I had removed the diamond engagement ring and the heavy platinum wedding band, placing them neatly on the mahogany nightstand. I knew Julian wouldn't let this go, but I also knew he wasn't driven by lingering affection for me. Julian was ambitious, calculated, and deeply protective of his social standing—qualities I had once mistaken for shared drive, but now recognized as pure opportunism.

When the bedroom door finally clicked open at 8:00 AM, Julian walked in looking exhausted, his hair disheveled, the hostility rolling off him in waves.

"You humiliated my mother in front of the entire elite class of this city," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "Do you have any idea what kind of scandal this is going to cause for my business ventures?"

"Your business ventures?" I stood up from the edge of the bed, letting the heavy silk of my wedding gown pool around my feet. "Your mother destroyed my family, Julian. She drove my mother to suicide. And you kept her a secret from me the entire time we were dating. Don't you dare stand there and lecture me about humiliation."

Julian’s expression hardened, a cruel smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Get over yourself. People in our position bury the past to build the future. But you... you couldn't control your temper. And because of your public outburst, my mother’s emotional distress has compromised our joint holdings."

That was when I saw the true shape of the trap. Julian hadn't just accidentally fallen in love with me; he had targeted me. His sudden entry into my social circle, his swift proposal, and his insistence on merging our family assets before the wedding were all part of a calculated financial heist orchestrated to absorb my mother’s substantial estate into his shell corporations.
