Chapter 5 - Justice in the High CourtSix months later, the 1st Criminal Court of São Paulo was packed to maximum capacity. Journalists from across Brazil filled the press gallery, eager to cover the final verdict of the trial that had gripped the nation—the case known as "The Miracle of Vila Alpina."

Marcos sat in the front row of the prosecution bench, wearing a sharp grey suit. Beside him sat Dona Helena, who was holding a framed photograph of Ana Clara in her lap.
In the glass-walled defendant dock sat Gustavo and Marcelo Ramos, both wearing orange prison uniforms and heavy leg irons. Gustavo looked completely broken, his eyes sunken, unable to look his mother or Marcos in the eye.
The presiding magistrate, Judge Beatriz Fonseca, slammed her gavel onto the wooden block, bringing the courtroom to absolute silence.
"After reviewing the overwhelming forensic evidence, the confession tapes, and the testimony of the state medical examiner," Judge Fonseca announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority, "this court finds the defendants guilty on all counts."
She turned her gaze toward Gustavo.
"Gustavo Medeiros," the judge declared, "for the premeditated, cold-blooded attempted murder of your sister, Ana Clara, the endangerment of your infant nephew, and grand embezzlement, you are hereby sentenced to forty-eight years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole."
Gustavo slumped forward, sobbing quietly as court guards pulled him to his feet.
"Marcelo Ramos," Judge Fonseca continued, looking at the syndicate boss, "for racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and extortion, you are sentenced to fifty-four years."
As the guards led the convicted felons away in chains, the courtroom erupted into applause. Journalists rushed forward with cameras, but Marcos simply stood up, turned to Dona Helena, and embraced his mother-in-law in a long, tearful hug.
"It’s over, Helena," Marcos whispered. "She can rest in peace now."
Officer Renata Lima approached them, holding out her hand to Marcos with a warm smile. "We secured a court order today, Marcos. The entire Medeiros trust fund has been legally restructured. Everything—the land, the properties, the accounts—has been placed into an untouchable educational trust for little Miguel."

"Thank you, Renata," Marcos said, shaking her hand warmly. "For everything."
"He deserves the world, Marcos," she replied, smiling softly. "Go home to your boy."
