Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Crown

Ethan scooped me up into his arms effortlessly, ignoring the blood that stained the lapel of his expensive suit jacket, and carried me swiftly down the wide hallway toward the master suite. Behind us, the heavy silence of his captains was palpable; not a single man dared to speak, let alone follow us.
He kicked open the heavy oak door of the master bathroom and gently set me down on the edge of the plush velvet settee, immediately dropping to his knees on the marble floor.
"Get Marcus on the secure line right now," Ethan barked over his shoulder to his head of security, who hovered nervously in the doorway. "Tell him to bring the trauma kit and meet me in the suite within two minutes, or he's a dead man."
"Ethan, it's just a cut," I whispered, wincing slightly as he carefully examined the jagged edge embedded in my heel. "I can clean it myself."
"Shut up," he snapped softly, though there was no malice in his tone—only a fierce, trembling urgency. He didn't look up at me. His large, calloused hands were remarkably steady as he used a pair of sterile tweezers to extract the porcelain shard from my flesh. "You don't move. You let me fix this."
Watching him work, I felt a strange, turbulent wave of emotions crash over me. For three years, I had believed I was a prisoner of war in a golden cage, traded away by a worthless father to a monster who viewed me as property. But looking at the tight, agonizing set of his jaw and the cold sweat beading on his forehead, I realized the man kneeling before me was carrying a burden heavier than any criminal syndicate.
Marcus, the organization’s trusted private physician, arrived with breathless speed, carrying a heavy metal case. He took one look at Ethan’s face—dark, thunderous, and radiating absolute menace—and wisely said nothing, quickly administering a local anesthetic and stitching the wound with practiced precision.
When Marcus finally packed up his gear and retreated from the room, absolute silence settled back over the suite.
Ethan remained kneeling on the floor in front of me, resting his forearms on my knees, staring down at the floorboards before finally lifting his gaze to meet mine.
"You should have been asleep," he said quietly, his voice raspy.
"I couldn't sleep," I replied, holding his gaze without flinching. "I never sleep well in this fortress, Ethan. You know that. Every shadow feels like a threat, and every locked door feels like a cell."
Ethan flinched as if struck, a shadow of deep pain crossing his striking features. He reached out slowly, his fingertips brushing a stray lock of hair away from my face with a tenderness that completely dismantled my defenses.
"It was supposed to keep you safe," he whispered, the confession tearing itself out of his throat. "From the moment I saw you sitting at that kitchen table, surrounded by vultures who were ready to sell you off for pocket change... I knew what I had to do. If I had courted you normally, if I had let you see who I really am, my enemies would have carved you to pieces to get to me."
"So you locked me away?" I asked, my voice thickening with unshed tears. "You turned me into a ghost in my own home?"
"I built an impenetrable wall around you," Ethan corrected fiercely, his fingers tightening gently against my knee. "I gave you wealth, safety, and a life free from the filth of my world. But I miscalculated. I thought distance equaled protection. I didn't realize that by starving you of my presence, I was slowly breaking your spirit just as surely as my enemies would have."
Before I could process the depth of his confession, the heavy oak door burst open without a warning knock.
Vance, Ethan’s primary enforcer and second-in-command, strode into the suite with a grim expression, holding a encrypted tablet.
"Boss, we have a serious breach," Vance said urgently, stopping short when he saw Ethan kneeling before me with blood on his hands. Vance’s eyes widened slightly in shock before he quickly composed himself. "The internal security feed from the perimeter just flagged an unauthorized signal transmitting from within the eastern wing. Someone inside this penthouse is leaking our shipment routes directly to the Moretti family."
Ethan stood up slowly, towering over Vance. The vulnerability that had flickered in his eyes just moments before vanished instantly, replaced by the terrifying, ruthless mafia boss who ruled the eastern seaboard with an iron fist.

The warmth in the room vanished. The war had finally come inside our walls.
And my husband was ready to burn the world down to protect what was his.
