Chapter 6 - A New Dawn in Manhattan

Six months after the bloody night of the leadership summit, the Manhattan skyline looked entirely different through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse.
The fear, the paranoia, and the constant, suffocating shadow of betrayal had finally lifted. Julian and his co-conspirators had been dealt with permanently, and the Moretti syndicate, crippled by the loss of their primary insider and several high-value shipping routes, had sued for an uneasy, permanent peace.
More importantly, the invisible prison walls inside the penthouse had been completely torn down.
I sat comfortably on the oversized white leather sofa in the living room, wearing a soft cashmere sweater, sketching architectural designs in a thick notebook. Across the room, the private elevator chimed.
Ethan stepped out. But unlike the old days, he didn't bring a cloud of dark tension into the home. He dropped his heavy leather briefcase by the door, loosened his tie, and rolled his shoulders as a genuine, relaxed smile touched his lips.
He walked straight across the room, sitting down on the sofa beside me, and wrapped a strong arm around my shoulders, pulling me close against his side.
"How are the blueprints coming along?" he asked softly, glancing down at my sketchpad.
"They're coming along wonderfully," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. "The contractors start renovating the downtown community center next week. The foundation paperwork cleared all state inspections this morning."
After the dust settled, Ethan hadn't just kept me locked away anymore. He had funded my dream of establishing a major philanthropic foundation dedicated to helping families trapped by extreme debt and predatory lenders—a way to ensure that other young girls wouldn't have to suffer the fate I had endured.
"You're changing the city, Izzy," Ethan murmured, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the top of my head. "Starting from the ground up."
"We're changing it," I corrected him, turning slightly to look up into his dark, devoted eyes. "Together."
He smiled, a warm, completely unguarded expression that only I was ever allowed to see. The world outside our windows was still ruthless, dangerous, and governed by the laws of blood and power. Enemies still lurked in the shadows, waiting for a moment of weakness.
But as I sat there in the warm sunlight of our home, wrapped in the arms of the most feared man in Manhattan, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

We were no longer a mafia boss and his captive ornament.
We were partners. And nothing in this world could ever break us again.
