Chapter 5 - Blood and Resolution

Julian took a slow, calculated step forward, keeping his suppressed pistol trained squarely on Ethan’s chest while motioning for one of the tactical mercenaries to grab me.
"Don't try anything, Ethan," Julian sneered, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "One twitch, and your wife's brains paint that velvet chair."
The mercenary in tactical gear took two heavy steps toward my end of the table, reaching out a gloved hand to haul me to my feet.
That was his first, and last, mistake.
In a movement so blindingly fast it defied human reaction time, Ethan didn't reach for his own gun. Instead, he kicked the heavy mahogany table forward with crushing force. The massive piece of furniture slammed violently into Julian’s knees, buckling his legs and sending his pistol flying across the marble floor.
At the exact same second, Salvatore and Marcus—who had been playing along with the standoff—drew their hidden weapons and opened fire on the two mercenaries flanking Julian. Two muffled thuds echoed through the ballroom as the mercenaries dropped instantly, lifeless before they hit the ground.
Julian scrambled backward on the marble, screaming in absolute terror as he tried to reach his dropped weapon.
Ethan rounded the edge of the table, his boots clicking rhythmically against the stone. He didn't run. He walked with the deliberate, terrifying grace of an executioner.
Before Julian could touch his gun, Ethan’s heavy leather boot came down squarely across Julian’s wrist, pinning it to the floor with a sickening crunch of breaking bones.
Julian shrieked in agony, clutching his mangled hand to his chest as he rolled onto his side, weeping openly on the floor.
Ethan crouched down slowly, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his expensive suit and hauling him up until their faces were inches apart. The room was deathly quiet, save for Julian’s pathetic, ragged breathing.
"You thought you were clever," Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously low, carrying a chill that made my blood run cold. "You thought because I kept her hidden, I didn't have eyes on every single movement you made. I knew you were skimming from the shipping accounts six months ago, Julian. I kept you alive because I wanted to see how far your greed would take you."
"Ethan... please... please don't..." Julian sobbed, blood dripping from his nose where he had hit the floor. "I have a family—"
"So did the men whose containers you hijacked," Ethan interrupted coldly.
He didn't execute him on the spot. In the mafia underworld, a quick death was too merciful for a traitor. Ethan signaled to Marcus and Dominic, who stepped forward like grim reapers, hauling the weeping, broken traitor up by his arms and dragging him toward the private elevator without a word.
When the elevator doors slid shut, sealing Julian’s fate in the sub-level interrogation cells, the heavy tension in the grand ballroom slowly began to dissipate.
Salvatore and Dominic stood quietly, keeping their heads down, chastised and deeply shaken by how close their organization had come to total destruction.
Ethan stood alone in the center of the room, breathing heavily, his suit jacket wrinkled, his knuckles bruised. He slowly turned his head and looked down the long mahogany table toward where I sat.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
The silence wasn't the cold, suffocating distance of the past three years. It was the heavy, raw silence of two survivors standing amidst the wreckage of a war they had barely managed to win.
He walked slowly down the length of the room toward me, his dark eyes never leaving my face. When he reached my chair, he didn't say a word. He simply reached down, slid his strong hands beneath my arms, and lifted me up out of the seat, pulling my body flush against his chest.
May you like
I buried my face in the crook of his neck, breathing in the familiar scent of cedarwood and danger, wrapping my arms tightly around his back as the terrifying reality of what we had survived finally washed over us both.
We had won. But we both knew the underworld would never stop watching us.
