Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Broken Step

The cool white marble of the grand foyer pressed against my cheek, but my mind was operating with the cold precision of a ledger. Grace Parker’s hand trembled slightly as she pressed the thick cotton towel against the cut above my eyebrow, her breath coming in shallow gasps of genuine terror.

At the top of the stairs, Vanessa Cole was finally descending, her theatrical cry of "Oh my God, Daniel!" echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. The delay wasn't lost on me. Three seconds of calculation before performance.

When Grace’s fingers brushed my uninjured shoulder, checking for internal trauma, I felt the calloused texture of her skin—hands worn down by cleaning supplies, late-night scrubbing, and the grueling second shift she worked to pay for her four-year-old daughter Lily’s specialized physical therapy. Vanessa, by contrast, had never broken a sweat in her life, her manicured fingers hovering over my arm like she feared staining her silk blouse with my blood.

"Mr. Whitfield, can you hear me?" Grace whispered, her eyes wide with unfeigned distress.

"I'm awake, Grace," I murmured softly, keeping my voice low enough that Vanessa, still a dozen steps away, couldn't hear.

When Vanessa finally reached us, dropping to her knees in a flurry of designer perfume and synthetic tears, she immediately tried to push Grace aside. "Move away, girl! Let me see him! Daniel, what happened? Did the marble give way? Oh, my poor darling—"

"The riser on the third step is split clean through," I said, my voice cutting through her performance with an icy edge that made Vanessa freeze mid-sentence. I opened my eyes, fixing my gaze on the woman I was supposed to marry in three weeks. "Odd. My maintenance log says it was inspected and reinforced on Tuesday."

Vanessa’s face tightened for a fraction of a second before her mask of frantic worry slammed back down. "Well, buildings age, Daniel! We need to get you to a hospital right now!"

"No," I said, slowly pushing myself up into a sitting position while ignoring Vanessa's frantic attempts to grab my good arm. I looked directly at Grace, who was quietly gathering her cleaning supplies, preparing to make herself invisible as she always did. "Help me up, Grace. Not you, Vanessa. Grace."
