Chapter 5 - The Vanguard Retaliation

Two weeks later, the corporate war spilled out into the open.

Vanguard Industries launched their coordinated assault on Whitfield Logistics, flooding the municipal zoning board with fraudulent code violations, attempting to freeze our freight licenses, and trying to buy out our primary union partners in the Carolinas. They thought I would be reeling from the betrayal of my fiancée and the administrative chaos at home.

They miscalculated.

With Grace managing the household with calm, flawless efficiency, and my mind entirely clear of domestic parasites, I counterattacked with the lethal precision that had kept my family at the top of Charlotte’s criminal and legal underworld for three decades.

By Friday afternoon, I sat in the executive boardroom of the Whitfield Tower downtown. Across the long glass table sat Arthur Vance, the silver-haired patriarch of Vanguard Industries, flanked by two sweating corporate lawyers.

"Your injunctions failed, Arthur," I said, sliding a thick packet of federal indictments across the glass. "Your shell companies have been seized. Your illicit wire transfers to my former fiancée have been subpoenaed by the federal prosecutor. And your port access permits in Charleston have been permanently revoked for racketeering."

Arthur stared at the documents, his face turning pale as he realized the trap had snapped shut. "You can't prove—"

May you like

"I don't have to prove anything to you," I interrupted, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "The federal marshals are waiting in the lobby to explain it to you. You tried to break my house from the inside. Now your entire portfolio is going into receivership."

As Arthur was led out of the boardroom by federal agents, I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling skyline of Charlotte. The city looked bright, sharp, and entirely secure.
