Chapter 1 - The Echo of the GarageThe water splashing across George Kessler’s expensive sleeve at Hawthorne House marked the exact moment Emma Lawson’s life fractured completely. Before George could strike or Daniel Brooks could rush over from the bar, Adrian Vale’s hand had shot out, locking around George’s wrist with a crushing force that silenced the entire private dining room.

“Enough,” Adrian had rasped, his voice cutting through the tension like broken glass.

In the chaos that followed, Emma fled into the Chicago night, dropping her apron on a hook and running straight into an alleyway where the rain chilled her to the bone. She thought she had escaped. She thought the silver hawk ring, her father’s old toolbox notes, and the terrifying weight of Adrian Vale would remain on the other side of those restaurant doors. But fate, carved from the bloody history of the Kingsley garage massacre fifteen years ago, had other plans.

Now, back in the present moment inside the lakefront mansion, blood soaked through the side of Adrian’s white shirt, and the two-minute embrace had broken down the last walls of Chicago’s most feared man.

“You remember,” Adrian whispered, his voice trembling against her collarbone as the shouting outside echoed closer. “Your father... Owen.”

“He didn't talk about it much,” Emma said softly, her hands resting on his trembling shoulders. “My mother begged him to forget that night. The police called it a tragic highway accident three weeks after he gave his statement. But Owen Lawson knew better. And so do you.”

Adrian pulled back slowly, his dark green eyes burning with a mixture of agony and disbelief. The ruthless facade of the billionaire mogul vanished, leaving only the traumatized seventeen-year-old boy who had sat shivering in a dark garage while his father bled out on the concrete.

“They are still looking, Emma,” Adrian said, ignoring the hot blood leaking through his fingers pressed against his ribs. “The men who killed my father... they didn't stop with him. They came after your father, too. And tonight, they tracked me here.”

Outside, the heavy oak doors of the study shuddered under the impact of a heavy blow. Footsteps rushed down the hallway. The trap was closing, and Emma realized with sudden, terrifying clarity that running away was no longer an option.
