Chapter 3 - The Threat at Home

I stared at the dead phone, my blood running cold.
Adrian had already moved. Before the echo of the automated voice could fade, he pulled out his encrypted satellite phone and barked three rapid commands to his head of security, Frank.
"Trace the ping. Secure the Pasadena residence. Burn out whatever rat made that call."
He snapped the phone shut and looked at me. "Who knew about Ethan’s medical records besides you and the school?"
"No one," I said, my voice shaking. "I paid cash for his pediatrician appointments under my maiden name. Nobody in Pasadena knew he had a rare blood disorder. It’s... it’s genetic. A mutation tied to your side of the family."
Adrian stood up, pacing the small ICU room like a caged tiger. "Which means someone inside my own organization leaked my ancestral medical profile to an external faction. Someone figured out Ethan was my son before the hospital alert went off."
The pieces fell into place with terrifying clarity. The school playground collapse hadn't been a random medical emergency; it had been engineered. A targeted biological agent or slow-acting toxin designed to trigger Ethan's rare genetic vulnerability, forcing us to the hospital and tripping the international donor match alert.
They wanted to draw Adrian out. They wanted to use Ethan as bait to fracture the Blackwood syndicate from the inside.
"They're coming for him, aren't they?" I whispered, tears finally spilling over my lashes.

Adrian stopped pacing. He walked over, placed his large, warm hand on my shoulder, and looked down at me with absolute, unyielding iron in his eyes.
"Let them come," Adrian said softly. "To get to my son, they have to get through every gun I own. And I own this city."
