Chapter 4 - The Shadow of RecoveryThree weeks later.

The morning sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the restored master suite, illuminating a room that looked vastly different from the dark, suffocating mausoleum Nora had first entered.
The heavy crimson velvet curtains had been replaced with sheer, cream-colored silk that fluttered gently in the mountain breeze. Fresh white lilies stood in glass vases on the polished tables, filling the air with a sweet, clean fragrance.
Dominic Rossi sat in a large leather armchair near the balcony, wearing a tailored charcoal suit trousers and a crisp white shirt, the right sleeve left unbuttoned to accommodate his light shoulder brace.
His skin was no longer pale and feverish; his color had returned, and his broad physique looked as formidable as ever. But his icy gray eyes were fixed entirely on the woman standing by the bed.
Nora was packing her canvas duffel bag.
Her debt was gone. Two weeks ago, Leo had handed her a certified bank draft for seventy-five thousand dollars—more than enough to clear her father’s medical bills, pay her back rent for a year, and secure a comfortable apartment downtown.
Her job was officially over.
"You don't have to leave today," Dominic said, his voice deep, smooth, and carrying a low, gravelly resonance that sent a familiar shiver down her spine.
Nora paused, her back to him, her fingers clutching a folded scrub top.
"My contract was for three weeks, Dominic," Nora said softly, turning around to face him. "Your infection is completely gone. The surgical graft is healing perfectly. You don't need a nurse anymore."
Dominic stood up from his chair. He walked across the room toward her, his heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. Despite the light brace on his shoulder, he moved with effortless, predatory power.
He stopped just inches from her, looking down into her green eyes.
"I don't need a nurse, Nora," Dominic murmured, reaching out with his left hand to gently tuck a strand of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was warm, possessive, and impossibly tender. "I need you."
Nora’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart slammed frantically against her ribs.
For three weeks, as she had tended to his wounds, managed his physical therapy, and sat beside him through long, quiet nights of recovery, an intense, dangerous bond had forged between them. They had bled together, fought together, and shared quiet truths in the dark that neither had ever told another living soul.
"Dominic..." Nora whispered, her voice trembling. "We live in two completely different worlds. You are a syndicate Don. You rule an empire built on violence and shadows. I am a nurse who works in emergency rooms."
"You belong wherever you want to be," Dominic said firmly, his thumb tracing the soft line of her jawline. "Before you walked through those doors, I was a dead man walking. I cared about nothing. I trusted no one. You brought me back to life, Nora. You fought for me when everyone else ran."
"Because it was my job," she argued weakly, though her hands instinctively reached out, resting against the lapels of his suit jacket.
"It wasn't just a job, and you know it," Dominic countered, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "You threw a bronze statue at a mobster's face for me. You stayed when bullets were flying. You held me when I was bleeding out."
He took her face in both of his large, warm hands, his gray eyes burning with an intense, unyielding passion.
"I can give you everything, Nora," Dominic swore softly. "Safety, wealth, freedom. But more than that... I give you my loyalty. My heart. It belongs to you."
Nora looked up into his eyes, seeing the absolute sincerity, the fierce devotion, and the deep love shining within the once-frozen heart of the mafia boss.
"Dominic..." she breathed.
Before she could answer, the bedroom door opened. Leo stepped inside, his expression dark and severe.
"Boss," Leo said quietly. "We have a problem. The Commission has called an emergency assembly at the Grand Hotel downtown. They've heard rumors that you're weak, that a civilian nurse is running your household. Don Moretti is demanding you hand over your harbor territories, or face a full syndicate war."
Dominic’s jaw tightened, the tender lover instantly transforming back into the ruthless apex predator of the underworld.
"Moretti thinks he can move on my territory while the ink on Vance's arrest warrant is still wet?" Dominic growled, stepping away from Nora.
"He believes you are compromised by Ms. Hayes," Leo explained carefully. "He considers her your glaring vulnerability."
Nora stepped forward, her green eyes flashing with that same unbreakable, stubborn pride that Dominic had fallen in love with.
"Vulnerability?" Nora scoffed softly.
Dominic turned to look at her, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across his handsome face.
"Get my coat, Leo," Dominic commanded, his eyes locked onto Nora. "And prepare a second vehicle. Ms. Hayes is coming with us."
May you like
Nora blinked. "I am?"
"You're my personal medical officer, Nora," Dominic purred, reaching out to take her hand, lacing his long fingers firmly through hers. "And it's time the Commission learned that my 'vulnerability' is the most dangerous thing in this city."
