Chapter 1 - The Bombshell at the Clinic

The air inside the VIP waiting lounge of the St. Jude Reproductive & Maternal Health Clinic smelled faintly of fresh white lilies and expensive disinfectant. High above Michigan Avenue, the sun poured through floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating plush velvet armchairs and pristine white marble floors.
Adrian Sullivan leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his legs with the effortless arrogance of a man who believed the world revolved around his schedule. Beside him, his sister Vanessa was tapping furiously on her phone, scrolling through luxury nursery catalogues.
"I’ve already spoken with the interior designer," Vanessa announced, not bothering to lower her voice. "The nursery at the lake house will be done in deep navy and gold. None of that muted, neutral nonsense Elena used for Noah and Lily. A Sullivan heir needs an environment that screams power from day one."
Chloe sat between them, cradling her soft cashmere cardigan around her waist. She wore an exquisite diamond halo ring on her left hand—a ring Adrian had purchased three weeks before his divorce was even finalized. She smiled sweetly, leaning her head on Adrian’s shoulder.
"I just want him to look like you, Adrian," Chloe murmured softly, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Strong, commanding, brilliant. I still can't believe it's finally happening. We don't have to hide anymore."
"You never had to hide, darling," Adrian replied, kissing the top of her head. He checked his gold Rolex. "Elena signed the papers twenty minutes ago. She didn't even put up a fight. Just took her little pity check and left. Honestly, it’s a relief. She was holding me back. My mother was right—Elena was suitable for when I was starting out, but she lacked the bloodline and ambition required for where I’m going."
Vanessa snorted softly. "Taking those kids to Spain is the best thing she could have done for you. No custody battles, no child support drama, no bratty interruptions when you’re building your real legacy. She called them 'dead weight' because she knows she can't raise them properly on her own."
"Actually," Adrian corrected with a cold smirk, "I called them dead weight. And they are. Noah’s too soft, always drawing pictures like his mother, and Lily is just quiet. They don't have the Sullivan fire. This baby... our boy... will be different."
The door to the private examination room clicked open.
Dr. Marcus Reynolds walked into the suite. He was a distinguished man in his early fifties, the chief of reproductive medicine, known throughout the Midwest for handling high-profile fertility cases for Chicago’s elite. Usually, Dr. Reynolds greeted his wealthy patrons with a warm, practiced charm.
Today, his face was unreadable. Pale. Almost solemn.
He carried a thick blue medical folder, along with a digital tablet displaying DNA marker breakdowns.
"Dr. Reynolds!" Vanessa practically beamed, standing up and smoothing her designer coat. "We’re ready. Did you get the high-resolution 4D images? My mother wants them printed and framed for the family dinner tonight."
Dr. Reynolds didn't smile. He gently closed the heavy oak door behind him and pulled the blinds shut, cutting off the view of the hallway.
"Please sit down, everyone," Dr. Reynolds said softly.
Adrian frowned, stepping forward. "Is something wrong with the baby? Chloe felt a little nauseous this morning, but I assumed—"
"The fetus is perfectly healthy, Mr. Sullivan," Dr. Reynolds interrupted, taking a seat behind his desk. He gestured toward the empty chairs. "Please. Sit."
Chloe exchanged a quick, nervous glance with Vanessa before sitting down. Adrian remained standing, his hands tucked casually into his suit pockets.
"Doctor, I have a boardroom meeting in forty-five minutes," Adrian said with an edge of impatience. "Just give us the gender confirmation update and the paternity verification report required for the family trust activation. My attorney needs the documentation today."
Dr. Reynolds sighed, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. He opened the blue folder and laid three distinct documents on the desk.
"Mr. Sullivan," the doctor began, his voice steady, measured, and devastatingly precise. "As part of the concierge prenatal intake package you selected, we conducted a comprehensive Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing panel. This includes full chromosomal mapping, health screenings, and automatic paternity verification against the paternal reference sample you submitted to our clinic two weeks ago."
"Yes, yes," Adrian snapped. "Standard procedure."
"It is standard procedure," Dr. Reynolds agreed. He looked up, his grey eyes piercing directly into Adrian’s. "Which is why I felt compelled to re-run the assay three separate times in our lab to guarantee absolute precision."
"Precision of what?" Vanessa interjected, her voice sharp with annoyance. "It’s Adrian’s baby. Why are you dragging this out?"
Dr. Reynolds removed his glasses and laid them flat on the desk.
"Mr. Sullivan, based on your official medical baseline file on record with our health network—specifically the comprehensive fertility screening you underwent four years ago following your varicocele procedure—you possess absolute, irreversible azoospermia."
The room seemed to drop ten degrees.
Adrian stared at the doctor. "What... what did you just say?"
"I am saying," Dr. Reynolds continued calmly, "that you are biologically incapable of producing sperm. You have been completely infertile for at least six years."
Vanessa gasped, clutching her chest. "That’s impossible! He has two children! Noah and Lily!"
"Noah and Lily were conceived after extensive micro-surgical retrieval and specialized assistance," Dr. Reynolds said firmly. "I reviewed Mrs. Elena Sullivan’s historical medical records. Those children were a medical miracle. Your baseline biology, Mr. Sullivan, has not changed. You cannot father a child naturally."
Adrian stood frozen, his brain struggling to process the words hanging in the air. "I... I don't understand..."
Dr. Reynolds turned his gaze toward Chloe, who had gone completely white. Her breath came in short, panicked gasps, her hands gripping her handbag so tightly the leather creaked.
"Furthermore," Dr. Reynolds added, sliding the second document across the table, "the fetal DNA recovered from Ms. Chloe’s blood sample shows a zero percent paternal match to your reference DNA."
Silence slammed into the room like a physical blow.
"Zero... percent?" Adrian whispered. The arrogance that had defined him twenty minutes ago evaporated, replaced by a terrifying, hollow emptiness.
"What is this?" Vanessa screamed, turning on Chloe like a rabid animal. "What is this old man talking about, Chloe?! Speak!"
Chloe began to cry, but there were no tears—only the jagged, frantic hyperventilation of someone caught in a trap with no exit. She shrank back into the leather chair.
"Adrian, listen to me..." Chloe whimpered, her sweet voice breaking into a ragged mess. "He’s wrong... the lab made a mistake... they mixed up the samples!"
"We don't mix up samples at St. Jude, Ms. Miller," Dr. Reynolds said coldly. "And to eliminate any possibility of error, our system cross-referenced the fetal paternal markers against our national donor and private client database, as required by the automated genetic matching software."
Dr. Reynolds pointed to the final page.
"The father of the child you are carrying has been positively identified as Mr. Julian Vance."
Adrian felt the floor tilt beneath his feet.
Julian Vance.
His chief corporate rival. The CEO of Vance Logistics. The man who had been bidding against Sullivan Enterprises for the past eighteen months for the high-speed rail distribution contract. The man Adrian hated more than anyone on earth.
"Julian...?" Adrian’s voice didn't sound like his own. It was a raspy, broken croak.
Vanessa let out a screech of pure rage, lunging toward Chloe. "You lying, scheming whore! You parasite! You tricked my brother! You destroyed his marriage for another man's bastard?!"
"Stop it! Get off me!" Chloe shrieked, ducking behind the chair. "He promised me everything! Julian promised he would destroy Adrian from the inside! Adrian was broke anyway! His company is built on debt!"
"Shut up! SHUT UP!" Adrian roared, his vision turning completely red. He grabbed the heavy oak chair and threw it against the marble wall, shattering it into splinters. "YOU SLUT! I GAVE YOU EVERYTHING! I DIVORCED MY WIFE FOR YOU!"
"You didn't give me anything!" Chloe screamed back, dropping the helpless act entirely. Her eyes burned with malicious triumph. "You're a fake, Adrian! You're an arrogant, pathetic weakling who needed an ego boost! Julian gave me two million dollars to get close to you, to access your private laptop, and to get pregnant so you would sign over your family assets to protect 'the heir'! Julian owns your supply chain now! You signed the leverage agreement three days ago!"
Adrian’s breath hitched. His chest tightened so violently he thought he was having a heart attack.
Three days ago.
When Chloe had begged him to sign the corporate guarantor documents for their new luxury penthouse... she had slipped in the restructuring paperwork for Vance Logistics.
He hadn't checked the fine print. He had trusted her. Because he thought she was carrying his son.
"My money..." Vanessa wailed, collapsing onto the floor, pulling at her hair. "Our family trust... the lake house... my inheritance..."
Adrian staggered back toward the glass window. His mind reeled in a chaotic vortex of agony, betrayal, and sudden, agonizing clarity.
Noah. Lily.
The quiet boy who loved to draw. The gentle girl who held his hand when he was stressed.
His real children. His only children.
The children he had called dead weight five minutes before signing away his life.
The children Elena was taking to Barcelona.
"Elena..." Adrian gasped, reaching frantically into his jacket pocket for his phone. His hands trembled so violently he almost dropped it. "Elena... oh God... Elena..."
He dialed her number.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"The number you have dialed is currently unavailable or outside the coverage area..."
May you like
Adrian dropped the phone. It cracked against the marble floor.
In the quiet, clinical room, surrounded by the shattered pieces of his fake legacy, Adrian Sullivan sank to his knees and began to scream.
