Chapter 4 - The Reckoning in Sitges

Three months later.

The coastal town of Sitges, located thirty minutes south of Barcelona, was bathed in the warm, golden light of early autumn. The Mediterranean Sea sparkled against white sandy beaches, and the air smelled of salt, sweet jasmine, and roasting chestnuts.

High on the cliffside sat Villa de la Rosa—a breathtaking white stone estate built in the 19th century, surrounded by lush olive groves and vibrant bougainvillea.

In the courtyard, Noah was standing before a large canvas, painting the ocean view with bold, vibrant strokes of blue and gold. Lily was running around a marble fountain, chasing a white fluffy puppy, her laughter echoing through the warm breeze.

I sat under the shade of a pergolas, reviewing the opening catalogue for the Carter Contemporary Art Foundation.

I wore a simple linen dress, my hair tied back with a silk scarf. My skin was sun-kissed, my eyes bright and clear. The weight that had crushed my spirit for seven years was gone, replaced by a deep, immovable peace.

A maid stepped onto the patio. "Señora Elena, there is a man at the front gate. Security has stopped him, but he refuses to leave."

I raised an eyebrow. "Who is it?"

"He claims to be your husband, ma'am. He looks... very unwell."

My heart didn't jump. My blood didn't run cold. I simply felt a quiet, firm composure.

"Tell security to let him into the courtyard," I said calmly. "Bu stay nearby."

Five minutes later, Adrian walked through the wrought-iron gates.

If I hadn't known him for a decade, I would not have recognized him.

The man who once wore four-thousand-dollar tailored suits and drove luxury sports cars was gone. Adrian wore an ill-fitting jacket, stained trousers, and worn leather shoes. His hair was messy, his face thin and pale, with hollow cheeks and deep dark circles beneath his bloodshot eyes.

He stepped into the courtyard, staring around at the magnificent estate, the marble fountains, the private security guards in dark suits standing along the perimeter.

Then his eyes met mine.

"Elena..." he rasped, taking a staggering step forward.

Noah immediately dropped his paintbrush and ran to my side, grabbing my hand. Lily hid behind my skirt, peeking out with wide, fearful eyes. She didn't recognize the broken man standing before us.

"Noah... Lily..." Adrian whimpered, reaching out his trembling hands. "It's Daddy... it's your daddy..."

"Noah, take your sister inside to the kitchen," I said softly, keeping my voice gentle. "Maria has baked fresh cookies for you."

Noah looked at Adrian, then looked at me. "Is he going to hurt us, Mommy?"

"No, my love," I kissed his head. "He can't hurt anyone anymore."

Noah took Lily’s hand and led her quickly toward the grand villa doors, leaving Adrian standing alone in the center of the courtyard.

Adrian watched them go, tears streaming down his hollow face. "They... they don't even know me..."

"You made sure of that, Adrian," I said, staying seated under the pergola. "What are you doing here?"

Adrian collapsed onto his knees right on the stone pavement, bowing his head toward the ground.

"Elena... please..." he sobbed, his voice raw with pure agony. "Please... save me. I’m begging you. I have nothing left. The company is bankrupt. The bank took the condo, the lake house, my car... everything. My mother is living in a rented studio apartment in Chicago, and Vanessa is working as a retail clerk..."

He looked up, his face twisted in desperate pleading.

"Chloe lied to me, Elena! She stole everything! Julian Vance ruined me! I was foolish, I was blind, I was an idiot! But I swear to you, I realized the truth! You are the only woman I ever loved! You are the mother of my children!"

I looked at him, feeling no anger, no vengeance—only the quiet clarity of a woman who had survived the storm.

"You didn't realize you loved me, Adrian," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly over the sound of the ocean waves. "You realized you needed my money. You realized that without my family's backing, you were nothing."

"No! That's not true!" he cried out, crawling a few inches forward before security stepped in front of him. "I miss my kids! I miss Noah! I miss Lily! You can't keep my children from me!"

"You called them dead weight, Adrian," I reminded him coldly. "In front of your lawyer, your sister, and your mistress. You threw them away the moment you thought you had a wealthier, better future."

"I was angry! I didn't mean it!"

"Words have consequences," I stood up, smoothing my linen dress. "You spent years tearing me down, letting your family insult me, treating me like a servant in my own home. I bore it all because I thought you were a good man who had lost his way. But you weren't lost. You were just greedy."

"Elena... please..." Adrian wept, reaching toward me. "Give me a second chance... I'll do anything! I'll sweep the floors of this villa! I'll work for your foundation! Just let me be near you and the kids!"

"No, Adrian," I said firmly, taking a step back toward the villa doors. "My children deserve peace. They deserve to grow up surrounded by love, truth, and respect. They do not deserve a father who views them as currency."

I turned to the head of security.

"Escort Mr. Sullivan off the property. If he returns to Sitges, enforce the international restraining order."

"Elena! ELENA! NO!" Adrian screamed, his voice breaking as the guards lifted him from the floor and led him toward the gates. "DON'T DO THIS TO ME! I'M SORRY! I'M SO SORRY!"

I didn't turn back. I opened the heavy wooden doors of Villa de la Rosa and stepped inside, shutting the gate on his desperate cries forever.
