Chapter 3 - The Collapse of the Sullivan Empire

Forty-eight hours after the signing of the divorce papers, the Sullivan Enterprises corporate building in downtown Chicago was under siege.
Reporters, financial investigators, and process servers swarmed the polished glass lobby. News vans lined the streets outside, their satellite dishes pointed toward the sky as anchors broadcast live updates on the scandal rocking the city’s business elite.
"...reports confirm that Sullivan Logistics has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following massive fraudulent transfers executed by former executive Chloe Miller and corporate competitor Julian Vance..."
Inside the executive boardroom on the 40th floor, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Adrian sat at the head of the long mahogany table—the same table where he had once hosted victory dinners. His suit was wrinkled, his tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot from two nights without sleep.
Across from him sat his mother, Evelyn Sullivan. She was a woman who had built her entire social standing on cold perfection, but today her hands shook uncontrollably as she held a glass of gin.
Vanessa sat in the corner, sobbing quietly into a silk handkerchief, her designer bags piled at her feet like garbage.
"How could you be so stupid?!" Evelyn slammed her glass onto the table, gin splashing onto the wood. "How could you let that street trash trick you into signing over our holding company's shares to Julian Vance?!"
"She had the internal passcodes, Mother!" Adrian screamed, his voice hoarse and broken. "She worked with Vance! They planned this for a year! They knew every move I was making because I gave her access to my private files!"
"Because you were blinded by a skirt!" Evelyn spat, her eyes flashing with venom. "You had a quiet, obedient wife who raised your children and kept her mouth shut! Elena never asked for luxury assets! She never touched your corporate accounts!"
Adrian let out a cruel, hysterical laugh. "Oh, now you love Elena, Mother? Three days ago, you called her a nobody! You told me to kick her out so we could have a 'real' heir!"
"She was a nobody!" Vanessa cried out, sitting up. "She didn't have money! She didn't have connections!"
The boardroom doors flew open.
Two men in dark suits stepped inside, followed by Thomas Dawson. The renowned attorney looked pristine, holding a leather briefcase that carried the weight of absolute authority.
"Mr. Sullivan," Dawson said smoothly, ignoring the tension in the room. "I am here on behalf of my client, Ms. Elena Carter."
Adrian practically threw himself out of his chair. "Thomas! Where is she?! Where is Elena?! Tell me where my wife is!"
"She is no longer your wife, Mr. Sullivan," Dawson reminded him coldly. "And her location is confidential under international privacy laws."
"I don't care about privacy! I need to speak to her!" Adrian begged, stumbling toward the attorney. The arrogance, the pride, the cold disdain he had displayed in the law office two days ago was completely gone. "I made a mistake, Thomas! A terrible, catastrophic mistake! Chloe set me up! I was poisoned, I was manipulated! I love Elena! I need my children!"
Dawson pulled a document from his briefcase and laid it flat on the mahogany table.
"You called your children 'dead weight' forty-eight hours ago, Mr. Sullivan," Dawson said, his voice dropping into a tone of chilling disgust. "The audio recording from Attorney Bennett's office receptionist has been reviewed and logged into court evidence."
Adrian went pale. "Audio... recording?"
"The law firm records all conference rooms for quality and security compliance," Dawson explained calmly. "Your exact words—'Take the kids, they're just dead weight while I start over'—are now part of the public record for the emergency sole custody petition."
Evelyn collapsed back into her chair, covering her face. "Oh God..."
"Furthermore," Dawson continued, sliding a thick blue folder toward Adrian, "we are serving you with a federal freeze order on all joint marital assets that you illegally attempted to conceal during the divorce proceedings."
"What joint assets?" Adrian gasped. "I didn't conceal anything from her!"
Dawson smiled—a thin, dangerous smile.
"You concealed the Carter Family Trust distributions, Mr. Sullivan," Dawson said softly. "You assumed Elena was an orphan with no family backing because her parents died when she was young. You never bothered to look into her grandfather’s estate."
Adrian blinked. "Her... grandfather?"
"Lord Henry Carter of the Spanish Maritime Group," Dawson revealed. "The woman you treated like a destitute charity case was the sole heir to a four-hundred-million-dollar maritime logistics empire. She allowed you to use her family’s private shipping lines for seven years to build Sullivan Enterprises."
The room went dead, terrifyingly silent.
Adrian stared at Dawson, his jaw hanging open, his breath completely stopping in his throat.
"What...?" Adrian whispered. "The... the Spanish shipping lines... that was her family?"
"Every contract that kept your company alive was guaranteed by the Carter Trust," Dawson said with absolute precision. "And yesterday morning at 9:00 AM Central European Time, Ms. Elena Carter officially terminated all shipping authorizations for Sullivan Enterprises."
Adrian felt his knees give out. He fell hard onto the carpet, clutching the edge of the boardroom table.
Without the Carter shipping lines, Sullivan Enterprises was nothing. It was an empty shell drowning in debt.
"She didn't just leave you, Mr. Sullivan," Dawson said, closing his briefcase with a crisp click. "She reclaimed what was always hers. You built your empire on her generosity, and you destroyed it with your arrogance."

Dawson turned on his heel and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the Sullivan family sitting among the ruins of the fortune they had stolen from the woman they despised.
Adrian laid his head against the cold floor, listening to his mother's frantic sobs and his sister's screams, as the reality of his utter destruction settled into his soul.
