Chapter 3 - Building Bridges in the Dark

The sun was just beginning to paint the skyline in shades of bruised purple and gold when Liam stirred on the couch.

I was standing by the small kitchen counter, pouring milk into a glass, when I felt a small tug on my apron. I looked down. Liam was rubbing his eyes with both fists, his dark hair sticking up in every direction, looking so much like Adrian that it made my heart ache.

“Good morning,” I whispered, crouching down to his eye level.

Liam blinked, his large eyes focusing on my face. A slow, tentative smile spread across his round lips. “Are you really my mom?”

“I am,” I said, my voice cracking as I pulled him gently into my arms.

He felt warm, solid, and entirely real. He buried his face in my neck, wrapping his small arms around my shoulders. In that single moment, every year of emptiness, every sleepless night, and every tear I had shed in secret dissolved into nothingness.

Adrian stood in the doorway of the small kitchen, leaning against the frame with a cup of coffee in his hand, watching us with a quiet, devastating intensity. The cold, untouchable CEO was gone; in his place was a man learning what it meant to be part of a family.

“Mom,” Liam said, pulling back to look at me seriously. “Dad said we’re going to eat pancakes.”

I laughed, a bright, genuine sound that I hadn’t heard from myself in years. “Did he now? And can your dad even cook pancakes?”

“I can manage,” Adrian said with a rare, crooked smirk, walking over to join us.

That morning felt impossible, fragile, and sacred. We sat around the tiny table, eating slightly burnt pancakes drowned in syrup, laughing when Liam got powdered sugar all over his nose. For a few hours, the outside world—the corporate deadlines, the looming threat of Eleanor Cole, and the complex legal minefield surrounding us—ceased to exist.

After breakfast, while Liam was engrossed in a cartoon on the small television, Adrian helped me clear the plates. As I reached for a sponge, his hand covered mine on the countertop.

“You can’t stay here,” Adrian said softly, his voice dropping so Liam couldn't hear.

I stiffened, pulling my hand back. “What do you mean? Are you taking him away?”

“No. Never,” Adrian said firmly, reading the panic in my eyes. “I mean this apartment isn't safe. My mother knows everything. The moment she realizes I brought Liam here—the moment she finds out we’re connecting—she will try to destroy you. She has lawyers, judges, and board members in her pocket.”

“I’m not afraid of your mother,” I retorted, lifting my chin.

“You should be,” Adrian replied grimly. “She destroyed my father’s business when he tried to cross her. She institutionalized my uncle when he threatened her control. She is a predator in custom Chanel suits. We need to be smart about this.”

“So what do you propose?” I asked, crossing my arms.

Adrian looked straight into my eyes, his gaze steady and unyielding. “Move into my estate. Not as a guest, and not as an employee. Move in as my partner—officially or not, we decide together. Let me protect you. Let us protect our son.”
