Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the autumn wind rustled through the golden leaves of the estate’s maple trees, carrying with it the bright, infectious sound of a child’s laughter.
The corporate restructuring of Cole Enterprises was complete. The corrupt board members and uncles had been ousted, and Adrian now ruled the company with ethics, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose. Eleanor was awaiting trial under house arrest, completely stripped of her power and influence.
But inside the estate, the dark shadows of the past had been completely washed away by sunlight.
I stood on the back terrace, holding a mug of warm tea, watching Adrian chase Liam across the emerald lawn. Liam was wearing a miniature superhero cape, shouting at the top of his lungs as Adrian pretended to be a defeated monster, falling dramatically onto the grass while Liam jumped on his chest in victory.
They looked so happy—so effortlessly complete.
Adrian looked up, caught my eye, and smiled. He whispered something to Liam, ruffled the boy’s hair, and then walked slowly toward the terrace, his steps unhurried, his gaze locked entirely on me.
When he reached the terrace, he stepped close, wrapping his arms gently around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder.
“Penny for your thoughts,” Adrian murmured, his breath warm against my neck.
“I was just thinking about how crazy life is,” I whispered, leaning back into his embrace. “Five years ago, I walked into a hospital room thinking I was selling my future. I never imagined I would find my family right here.”
Adrian turned me around so I was facing him. His dark eyes were filled with a deep, reverent tenderness. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple velvet box.
“You didn't sell your future,” Adrian said softly, opening the box to reveal a diamond ring that caught the autumn sunlight like a star. “You built it. Even when I was blind, and even when my mother tried to tear us apart, you were the foundation of everything good in my life.”
He dropped gracefully to one knee right there on the terrace, ignoring the damp grass and the cool breeze.
“Marry me,” Adrian asked, his voice steady and full of absolute certainty. “Not because of a contract. Not because of a child. But because I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life proving it.”
Before I could answer, a small pair of arms wrapped around my knees, nearly knocking me over.
“Say yes, Mom!” Liam cried out, looking up at us with wide, hopeful eyes. “Dad bought chocolate cake!”

I laughed through the happy tears spilling over my lashes, pulling both of them down into a messy, tangled embrace on the terrace stone.
“Yes,” I whispered against Adrian’s lips as he pulled me into a deep, unending kiss. “Yes, a million times yes.”
