Chapter 4 - The Corporate War and Eleanor's Counterattack

Moving into Adrian’s estate felt like stepping into a fortress designed to keep the world out. Located behind wrought-iron gates on the outskirts of the city, the sprawling stone mansion was breathtaking, but to me, it felt like a gilded cage echoing with the ghosts of Eleanor Cole’s tyranny.

Yet, having Liam running down the marble hallways, laughing as he chased a golden retriever across the manicured lawns, changed everything. The house was no longer a monument to cold wealth; it was slowly becoming a home.

For two weeks, we lived in a fragile, beautiful bubble. Adrian transitioned from a distant, cold executive into a devoted father and an attentive, gentle partner. We spent our evenings reading stories to Liam, sharing quiet dinners on the terrace, and slowly rebuilding the fragments of a connection that had started under the most harrowing circumstances imaginable.

But bubbles are meant to pop.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. I was in the estate’s grand library, reviewing project spreadsheets for work, when the heavy oak doors burst open.

Eleanor Cole stood on the threshold.

She looked immaculate as always, draped in a charcoal wool coat, her silver hair styled to perfection, her eyes as cold and sharp as winter ice. Behind her stood two burly private security guards and a sharp-faced corporate attorney carrying a leather briefcase.

I stood up slowly behind the mahogany desk, my heart slamming against my ribs.

“Well, well,” Eleanor purred, stepping into the room with slow, deliberate clicks of her heels. “The little incubator has managed to upgrade her accommodations. I must admit, I underestimated your ambition. I thought a simple payout would keep you crawling in the dirt where you belong.”

“Get out of this house, Eleanor,” my voice was steady, sharpened by the weeks of reclaiming my dignity.

Eleanor laughed, a dry, grating sound. “This house belongs to the Cole family trust, my dear. And as of this morning, the board has voted to initiate emergency guardianship proceedings regarding my grandson, and a restraining order against unauthorized interlopers.”

She snapped her fingers at the attorney beside her. The man stepped forward and slammed a thick stack of legal documents onto the desk.

“You cannot legally do that,” I said, though a cold dread pooled in my stomach. “Adrian is his father—”

“Adrian is currently being stripped of his voting shares by his uncles in a emergency board session I personally engineered,” Eleanor interrupted, a triumphant smirk twisting her lips. “He thought he could defy me? He thought he could play house with a college dropout and hide my grandson from me? He is finished. And you—you will be arrested for kidnapping and extortion within the hour if you don't pack your cheap bags and walk out those front gates right now.”

Before I could answer, the library doors flew open again.

Adrian strode into the room, his suit jacket off, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, breathing heavily as if he had run all the way from the east wing.

“Mother,” Adrian’s voice was a low, lethal growl. “Get away from her.”
