Chapter 1 - THE WAKE AT MIDNIGHTThe shattered porcelain from Teresa’s dropped tea glass lay scattered across the polished hardwood like frozen diamonds, but no one moved to pick them up. The room hung in a state of suspended breath. Mark’s low, raspy groan had not been a trick of the acoustics or the frantic imagination of a grieving family. It was real. It was wet, heavy, and undeniably human.

Claire remained frozen over the casket, her palm pressed against her husband’s cold chest. Her mind raced, violently untangling the timeline Marcus had constructed for them. If Mark was breathing now—even if it was shallow, intermittent, and agonizingly weak—then he had never stopped breathing entirely. Or worse, he had been placed in a state designed to mimic death with terrifying precision.

“He’s alive!” Teresa shrieked, her hands flying to her mouth as tears finally broke through her frozen shock. “My boy is alive!”

“Mom, shut up!” Marcus hissed, his voice dropping an octave into a harsh, commanding whisper. He took a sharp step forward, his eyes darting frantically toward the front windows where the flashing red and blue lights of the approaching ambulance were just beginning to paint the snow-covered suburban street. “You’re making a scene. The girl is hallucinating from lack of sleep, and Claire is losing her mind!”

Claire turned her head slowly, her eyes locking onto her brother-in-law. The fragile, broken widow who had arrived at the house hours earlier was entirely gone. In her place stood a woman whose veins ran with pure ice.

“Don't you dare,” Claire said, her voice terrifyingly calm. “Don't you dare take another step toward this casket, Marcus.”

Before Marcus could lunge forward or spin another lie, the heavy front door swung wide open with a crash of winter air. Two paramedics rushed into the foyer, heavy boots thudding against the floorboards, carrying a trauma kit and a portable monitor.

“Step back! Everyone, please, step back!” the lead paramedic, a weathered man named Hayes, commanded immediately.

Marcus opened his mouth, trying to intercept them. “Listen to me, it’s a false alarm, the child—move aside—”

“Shut your mouth, Marcus!” Claire shouted, pointing a trembling finger at him. “Do your job!” she yelled at the paramedics. “He was declared dead at a private clinic six hours ago, but he just groaned. His finger moved! He is breathing!”

Hayes didn't hesitate. Trained medics looked past the politics of a room and focused entirely on the body. He dropped to his knees beside the velvet-lined casket, ripping open his medical kit. He slapped two stethoscope nodes against Mark’s chest while his partner readied the oxygen bag.

The entire living room held its collective breath. Aunt Sarah crossed herself frantically in the corner. Teresa wept silently into a lace handkerchief. Marcus stood stiffly by the doorway, his hand gripping his phone so hard his knuckles turned chalk-white, his thumbs furiously typing a message that no one else could see.

“I’ve got a pulse,” Hayes announced suddenly, his voice sharp and focused. “Thready, but it’s there. Forty beats per minute. Core temperature is critically low—feels like he’s been kept in an ambient chill environment. Get the stretcher in here right now! Move!”

As the second paramedic wheeled the gurney forward, Claire reached down and gently kissed her daughter’s forehead. “You saved him, baby. You stayed when everyone else told you to leave.”

Chloe buried her face in Claire’s coat, finally letting out the soft, choked sobs she had held back for seven agonizing hours.

As the medical team lifted Mark out of the satin-lined box and placed him onto the rolling stretcher, Claire glanced past them. Marcus was already backing toward the hallway, his face drained of all color, his eyes wide with a panic that had nothing to do with grief and everything to do with exposure.

As the ambulance doors slammed shut outside, Claire knew the real war hadn't ended with the wake. It was only just beginning.
