Chapter 4 - THE AWAKENINGThe ICU room was bathed in the soft, rhythmic glow of cardiac monitors and intravenous pumps. Mark lay propped up against a stack of white pillows, his skin pale and translucent, his hair matted against his forehead. An oxygen cannula rested under his nose, and an IV line pumped warm saline into his arm to combat the severe core hypothermia.

When Claire pushed the door open, Mark turned his head slowly. His eyes—the same warm, steady brown eyes she had fallen in love with a decade ago—widened with a rush of overwhelming emotion.
Claire didn't say a word. She crossed the room in two strides, climbed right up onto the edge of the hospital bed, and buried her face in the crook of his neck, wrapping her arms around him with a fierce, desperate grip that threatened to break his fragile ribs.
Mark let out a shaky, raspy breath, his weak arms rising to wrap around her back.
“You’re freezing,” she sobbed into his shoulder, tears finally breaking free and streaming down her cheeks. “You’re so cold, Mark.”
“I know,” he whispered, his voice sounding like dry sandpaper scraping across stone. “I remember... I remember the warehouse. The cold air. Marcus... Marcus was standing over me with a syringe.”
Claire pulled back, her hands framing his gaunt face, tracing the sharp lines of his jaw. “He tried to kill you, Mark. He and that doctor at the clinic... they put you in stasis, filed a fake death certificate, and tried to bury you before an autopsy could touch you.”
Mark closed his eyes for a long moment, a tear escaping the corner of his lid and tracking down his temple. The betrayal by his own flesh and blood cut deeper than any physical trauma. “He needed my signature to sell the company’s primary distribution hub to Aegis. I refused. So he decided to clear the board.”
The door to the hospital room clicked open, and Detective Miller stepped inside, holding a small notepad. He paused respectfully, giving them a brief moment before clearing his throat.
“Mr. Vance, I’m glad to see you’re awake. We have a lot of ground to cover, and your brother is currently downstairs in holding denying every charge.”
Mark turned his gaze toward the detective, his eyes hardening with a cold, resolute fury. “He won’t be able to deny it for long. In my office safe at the warehouse—the primary facility on 4th Street—there’s a secondary ledger. Digital backups, wire transfer receipts, and recorded phone conversations between Marcus and Dr. Salgado discussing the entire acquisition of Aegis CryoTech.”
Detective Miller’s eyes lit up. “Where in the warehouse?”

“Inside the sub-zero pharmaceutical vault,” Mark said clearly. “The access code is Chloe’s birthday. Marcus thought it was a secure hiding spot because nobody without industrial thermal gear can survive inside that vault for more than five minutes.”
Claire squeezed Mark’s hand tighter. “Then it’s a good thing we have the keys.”
