Chapter 6 - THE SPRING SUNThree months later, the bitter chill of the Chicago winter had finally yielded to the warm, golden sunlight of late spring. The trees lining the suburban streets were bursting with vibrant green leaves, and the air smelled of wet earth and blossoming lilacs.

The living room of their home was filled with the soft hum of laughter and ordinary life.

Mark sat at the dining table, looking healthier and stronger than he had in years. The color had returned to his cheeks, and though the faint scars of chemical stress still lingered in his eyes, the heavy shadow of the ordeal had been lifted.

Across from him sat Chloe, intensely focused on a massive puzzle spread out across the table, humming a quiet tune to herself as she snapped a puzzle piece into place.

The front door opened, and Claire walked in carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and sugar cookies. She set them down on the table, leaning over to press a gentle kiss to the top of Mark’s head.

“How’s the new restructuring coming along?” Claire asked, sitting down beside him and handing him a glass.

Mark smiled, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close. “The courts officially stripped Marcus of his shares last week. The board voted me back in as sole CEO, and we’re liquidating the cryogenic division entirely. We’re going back to what my father built—honest storage, real food distribution, nothing shady.”

“And Marcus?”

“Trial starts in two weeks,” Mark said calmly, taking a sip of lemonade. “His defense attorney tried to plead temporary insanity based on corporate stress. The judge threw it out within five minutes after reviewing the financial wire logs and the audio files you and Detective Miller pulled from the vault.”

Claire smiled, resting her head against his shoulder. Then she turned her gaze toward their daughter.

Chloe looked up from her puzzle, catching her parents watching her. She flashed a bright, mischievous grin, picked up a puzzle piece, and placed it perfectly into the center of the board.

“Mommy?” Chloe called out.

“Yes, sweetie?”

Chloe walked over, climbed right up onto Mark’s lap—the very man everyone had told her was gone forever—and wrapped her small arms around his neck, burying her face against his chest.

“I told you he wasn't sleeping,” Chloe whispered happily.

Mark wrapped his arms around both of them, pulling his family tight against his heart, feeling the steady, rhythmic thumps of life that no machine, no clinic, and no lie could ever take away again.
