Chapter 2 - The Files in the SafeEvelyn Price’s office smelled of old leather, expensive parchment, and quiet authority.

When I walked through her double doors, hair slightly disheveled and a faint bruise forming on my scalp, Evelyn didn't offer superficial sympathy. She offered a closed door, a glass of ice water, and an undivided, razor-sharp focus.
“Nora,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping as she saw my appearance. “What happened?”
I didn't answer with words. I unzipped my purse, reached inside, and placed Arthur’s brass key right in the center of her mahogany desk, followed by a thick stack of digital exports I had quietly downloaded from the home office server over the past forty-eight hours.
Evelyn stared at the key, recognition instantly flashing in her eyes.
“Arthur’s safe deposit box,” she murmured. “The one containing the true operating agreement of Sterling Enterprises.”
“Not just the operating agreement, Evelyn,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of fear. “Every fraudulent invoice Daniel signed over the past three years. Every personal luxury vehicle expensed as a corporate asset while he defaulted on payroll taxes. And the master deed to the house—which, as it turns out, was never transferred to Daniel and Lorraine. It remains under the Arthur Sterling Family Trust, of which I am the primary executive trustee.”
Evelyn slowly looked up from the documents, a slow, appreciative smile spreading across her lips.

“For six years, Daniel and his mother thought you were just the quiet wife who cooked dinners and balanced the checkbook,” Evelyn said softly. “They had no idea you were the only thing keeping their entire empire from collapsing into federal bankruptcy.”
“They wanted sixty dishes,” I replied, standing up and buttoning my jacket. “Let’s give them a proper feast.”
