Chapter 5 - The EvictionThe transition of power was as swift as it was absolute.

Within two hours, the glittering birthday party had transformed into an orderly federal asset seizure. Guests had fled out the front doors like rats from a sinking ship, unwilling to be associated with an impending federal indictment.

Lorraine sat on the velvet sofa in the living room, weeping hysterically not out of remorse, but out of pure, unadulterated shock as federal marshals tagged her designer handbags and jewelry boxes with inventory stickers.

“You can’t throw me out!” Lorraine sobbed, looking up at Evelyn Price. “I am a Sterling! This is my home!”

“It was Arthur’s home, Mrs. Sterling,” Evelyn replied coldly, snapping her briefcase shut. “And under the terms of the trust, you have exactly thirty minutes to pack two suitcases before the locks are officially changed.”

Daniel was already seated in the back of a federal cruiser parked out in the driveway, his head bowed in utter humiliation. For years, he had believed his last name made him untouchable. He had believed that bullying, intimidation, and treating his wife like an unpaid servant were signs of power.

Now, stripped of his title, his company, his money, and his freedom, he finally understood the fatal flaw in his arrogance.

He had underestimated the quiet woman who held the keys.

As the marshals escorted Lorraine out the front door, she cast one final, venomous glare in my direction.

“You’ll regret this, Nora!” she screamed as she was guided down the steps. “You’ll end up with nothing!”

I stood in the doorway, the cool autumn breeze washing over me, feeling a profound, unshakeable peace settle over my soul.

“I already have everything I need,” I whispered to the empty hallway.
