Chapter 3 - The Three Unexpected GuestsTwo hours later, my sedan pulled back into the driveway of the Sterling estate.

The party was in full swing. Laughter and pop music spilled out onto the front lawn. Through the windows, I could see guests gathered around the dining table, picking at appetizers and complaining about where I had gone.

I didn't enter through the kitchen. I walked up the front steps, pushed the heavy oak double doors open, and stepped into the foyer.

Three figures walked in right behind me.

First was Evelyn Price, carrying a thick leather briefcase with the calm, terrifying aura of a prosecutor walking into a slam-dunk trial. Second was Agent Marcus Vance of the federal financial crimes division—a long-standing contact of Evelyn’s who specialized in corporate white-collar fraud. Third was local tax commissioner Harold Vance, holding a court-ordered asset freeze warrant.

The chatter in the dining room died instantly.

Daniel stumbled out toward the hallway, a whiskey glass in his hand, his face flushed with alcohol and irritation.

“Nora! Where the hell have you been?!” Daniel shouted, pointing a finger at me as guests peered curiously from behind him. “The caterers are gone, people are hungry, and you think you can just wander off—?”

“Shut up, Daniel,” I said.

My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a razor blade.

Daniel blinked, stunned. “Excuse me?”

Lorraine swept out of the dining room, her diamond necklace flashing under the chandelier, her expression twisted into a mask of indignant rage.

“How dare you speak to your husband that way in front of my guests!” Lorraine shrieked, marching up to me. “Look at you! Disheveled, disrespectful, and completely useless! Where are the sixty dishes you were ordered to prepare?!”

I didn't flinch. I stepped past her, walked straight to the head of the dining table, and turned to face the thirty shocked relatives and friends.

“There are no sixty dishes,” I said clearly. “Instead, I brought three unexpected guests.”
